Especially considering that Canada’s immigration policy is currently *extremely* strict.  PR is virtually impossible if you don’t have a (real) Canadian degree or a very in-demand profession.  Even doctors are struggling to get the points.

Tightening the system even further would put the CPC waaaay out to the right of Canadian public opinion.

The irony is that this somewhat recent anti-immigrant push probably would have helped PP during the election when anti-immigrant rhetoric was at an all time high. The conservatives really seemed to sit on their hands regarding immigration at the time though.

I recall that being a major factor in disgruntled voters chosing Carney in the end. The conservatives just didn’t seem to be serious about addressing the issue of immigration, especially as a sub-faction in the conservatives is literally making trips to India to speak about immigration in Punjab.

Most Canadians are growing sick of grifters (even the ones that this sort of rhetoric worked on). They’re more concerned about the economy and the future of Canada.

Also all Carney has to do to combat Poilievre is share videos of Pierre pushing for mass immigration in community centres….. or if he wants to not do a low blow simply ask him what Poilievre’s strategy will be regarding the economy.

Liberals already made changes so asylum seekers have (small, but still) co-pays on medication and some treatments. Plus the border / immigration bill that’ll most likely pass the senate this week that cuts down on asylum claims.

    > Instead of a salient argument, we get only outrage.

Pretty much Poilievre’s entire modus operandi, and that of right-wing populist governments in general. They’re not trying to appeal to people’s reason. They’re trying to appeal to fear and ignorance, while packaging it as „common sense“.
