Are they widening the road or not? From the illustrations, it looks like they are simply repainting part of the road.

This road connects the small village of Syren with the back of a residential area in Alzingen/Hesper. There are multiple other routes that are just a couple of minutes longer and it’s used primarily as a rat run for commuter traffic. Most of the residents at both ends hate the “parasitic traffic”.

I’ve ridden it during the velosummer (a couple of years ago they closed it for the whole month). It’s finally a safe route out of a lot of the nearby villages to get to the city, even if it is a few extra kms.

I’m not convinced the speed limit nor the paint will be respected. People will still rush to work and I’m sure the current 90km/h will remain the standard for a good proportion. A cycle route can be considered safe when you feel capable of taking an 8 year old kid on it, this surely is not it.

It’s a real shame because if ever there was a place to finally dedicate just one road to form a real safe cycle commuter route this was it. Impact would be minimal and hundreds would benefit.
