Submission Statement:
Artificial intelligence has become a game-changer for the video game industry, with Chinese developers exploring new production methods such as AI agents that can quickly generate complete games.
Tencent has already measured the efficiency gains from AI in its internal projects. According to company data, the character animation production cycle for its Photon Studios was shortened by 40 percent. In another project team, the time for prototyping and validating character abilities was reduced from two weeks to just three days.
Tools are already being used in Tencent’s flagship internal projects and have also been made available to external companies. Including Perfect World and Kuro Games, more than 50 external companies are now using these tools. The company is also expanding its overseas business, offering trials of these tools to leading game companies in Japan, South Korea, and Europe.
Oh, fantastic. Games coming out way faster with less oversight and less real people working on them.
Didn’t a video game use AI recently, and get stripped of all it’s awards and everything? I heard good things about that game until the AI stuff, which got it taken off my wishlist.
I wish we would stop with the AI slop garage infecting everything.
This is sorely needed. Something had to give. Video game development times are reaching ridiculous proportions, half a decade minimum for most AAA games. That’s not sustainable.
Gaming, like a lot of other media, is gonna go through a whole new era of slop. Now I’m sure there are going to be quite a few crafty individuals who are gonna go bonkers with ai to the point you wont be able to tell; but, for every one diamond you’re gonna have a truckload of manure to sift through. The real winners will continue being the human-made things even if they’re quality appears to be sub-par to the uncannily polished ai stuff simply because people are going to value effort. The overall impact might be an implosion of industries as consumer spending tanks in response to burnout on low-quality, low-effort content where they can’t tell before its too late and the sheer volume of new content being overwhelming.
Asset Flips just got upgraded to AI Slop. pumping out # of new games doesn’t mean that they’ll be good and playable.
The majority of these AI slop games will remain unfinished or even unplayed by players. SteamDB already shows that quantity doesn’t matter. If people can buy good games on sale and NOT play them, AI slop games will have an even harder time.
Their goal would just be to sell unplayable slop and hope that players don’t refund out of laziness.
