This measure will likely cause many people to uninstall Discord and look for other alternatives, I don’t know why they feel the need to do this, Especially regarding the implications of these data leaks

  2. Matrix protocol based programs like Element are where I will go next if they do this.

  3. Slow motion self destruction of an app that in all honesty is extremely replaceable and really got too comfortable.

May the backlash burn even brighter as the day and week goes on. They deserve it all for trying to force mandatory age verification on everyone.

Apparently their support system is struggling with the influx of anger, so I would encourage everyone to contribute to that with even more emails and support tickets.

You can also file complaints with government officials here:

    * Canada (file a complaint with the Privacy Commissioner): https://www.priv.gc.ca/en/report-a-concern/file-a-formal-privacy-complaint/

Unless they fixed the verification being easily fooled by a detailed enough 3d model this won’t accomplish much

A lot of these companies forget that convenience is what made them popular to begin with, people will just move on. I use Discord so infrequently I might as well not use it at all.

Are they going to disconnect my nitro until I verify? I doub’t it

Ask the admins in every community you’re in:

„What other platforms do they have a chat style form style presence that you can join.“

Try to get ahead of this.

  8. Discord got so bad that they required an ID !? What did I miss in the past 5 years ?? 🤯

Discord is bloated as fuck why you still use this app? Good old TeamSpeak or Mumble do the job.

Uploading your face and/or ID to the internet is basically going, „please steal my identity and ruin my life. I’m literally asking for it.“

I’m actually enjoying closing accounts and canceling subscriptions these days.

    I’d highly recommend it.

I hope all those places that use discord as a database find a new place to put all the info.

It’s just crazy to me that I’ve had an adult account for almost 11 years and now I’ll be considered a child without face verification. They just want to sell all of our information, more invasive shit from big tech.

Those breaches are exactly why i won’t trust companys that switch to Face/ID verification. I don’t know any company that made a safe age verification process yet. If they enforce it, welcome back Teamspeak.

  15. I am not giving my Driver’s License to just any randomass company that asks for it; certainly not Discord.

I don’t know why these platforms over the years become big and popular, then make dumb choices to bring upon their own downfall. It’s Skype all over again.

  17. I’m deleting my account if this goes through, the only downside will be I can’t call my gf when we play games but I’m sure there’s another app I could find

  18. Imaging having to give the same info for a pRon website. The leaks would be from every ends.

I’ve been looking at alternatives, I’d appreciate if anyone has a favorite that they wanna tell me about

There should be fines for % of global revenue for privacy failures like this. Then maybe they won’t keep data they have no business keeping. My data has been pwned so many times, and nothing seems to be changing.

  21. It’s not even the data breach people should be worried about. It’s the selling of your facial images.

  22. Asking people for IDs after a breach is wild. Trust is hard to rebuild once you’ve already dropped the ball.

  23. Desertwind16v on

Good fuck em. I’m not doing that, I don’t care how much content I miss out on.

  24. No company can be this stupid. Either they’re exploring more data mining options or they’re getting pressured to do this

  25. WingerRules on

Jesus Christ, the solution to all this garbage without intruding on everyone else’s rights is to just create a .kid top level domain where only kid friendly content can exist and require devices and operating systems have an easy switch for parents to lock devices to those domains and kid friendly apps.

Hold parents responsible for being lazy monitoring their kids.

Is there a better alternative? Discord been kinda ass for a long time now

Fuck the children, ill never do this. Id rather sit in a room by myself and stare at a wall.

  28. We raid WOW on Wednesday. I will let the Raid leader know that they need to find a new voice app or I won’t be in Discord. I am the MT and strategy explainer.

  29. I don’t have a single Discord page that I follow that is adult that I am aware of. My personal pages for my TTRPGs certainly aren’t. If they make me and my players register anyway, I will find another platform.

  30. 31337hacker on

I’m strongly considering deleting my account from 2015 because of this. And if I end up doing it, then I’ll make sure to let them know exactly why.

  31. I don’t care about children. It’s not our job to parent other people’s kids. I’m so sick of the, “but the children!” argument. I don’t care. Leave me alone.

  32. „Don’t worry, bro, we’ll definitely only use it for age verification!“ as if the entire point of this weren’t to attach a real person’s name and ID to everything said online. It’s a means of social control, not protection.
