in that case great bring on the sweden Gripen’s as they will bring jobs to Canada & we will have to rely even less on the US for everything under the sun. I call this a win/win.

I think this deal is going to be too good for Canada to pass up. My guess:
Canada takes the Saab deal and the 72 Gripen
Canada orders another tranche of F-35’s to make a proper fleet and service NORAD.

Sounds like Hoekstra would like us to seriously increase our investment in non-US anti-air defences.

Oh FFS, just buy the fucking F-35’s already…at this rate, by the time we get any new jets, the CF-18’s are all going to be broken, and the rest of the world will be on 7th gen jet’s. We should have just gone ahead with the purchase a decade ago.
Inoffensive_Account on
My only concern is that having to manage two different sets of aircraft will be more expensive on us taxpayers.
On the other hand, with much of the Saab production being in Canada, at least some of that money will stay in Canada.

F35 and Rafale (with 2 engines) would have been better for Arctic patrol.

Picking the Gripen will be political meddling at its finest. If we’re worried about an F-35 kill switch or lack of parts in the face of a hostile US – the US would establish air superiority within 24 hours in the case of a hot conflict, so it doesnt really matter. There’s also virtually no offensive campaign we would go on that would not pique US interest

Detail the 16 we already paid for to NORAD duty, that way the yanks have nothing concrete to complain about.

Let’s cancel the deal for a 2nd time so that we can have a 3rd round of competition only to chose the F-35 10yrs from now….

I’d like to know how may hundreds of millions are already invested in the F35 deal.
I could be wrong but I believe I heard F35 specific modifications were already underway at the bases they will be located at.
You would also assume they have started staffing and training as well.
My guess is we don’t bail on this deal but we do look to scale it back as much as possible while closing a deal for some Saab models as well.

All of these articles are just rehashing stuff that’s been going on for the past (almost) year.
Until there’s an official announcement, we’re still going with the F-35.
All these “might be…” headlines are speculation at best.

Good….
Trump guaranteed that even if the F35 is „the superior plane“ it has become the modern equivalent of the Trojan Horse. Too many political strings attached.
Why should Canada hang an albatross around it’s own neck?

Awesome. I mean we did pay for some already so we should have those but the majority should not . We can build our own if that is still part of the deal.

If it was just Trump we could maybe go F35. But the whole right down there are suspect. BTW anyone who says there is no kill switch is seriously delusional. The opportunity to weaken their opponents in this manner is impossible for some to ignore.

I know the F35 is a better jet but I would rather pick the gripen due to less reliance on the US. Also the jobs this will bring if we can repair them in Canada. There is still the problem that the US owns the IP for the gripen engine. I heard there was a possibility rolls Royce may replace the GE engine. If that’s the case gripen is the better option.
