Spot on. Clear and evidenced based safety measures are whats needed alongside enforcement, not this high-vis nonsense.

If safety truly is the goal then high-vis is so far down the list of effective things to implement.

Totally agree. As I always say to people, the alcohol limit for drivers makes no different to me whether it’s 0, 20 or 50. I have never been stopped or breathalysed so YMMV

  3. We do need more legislation though, we need legislation that ensures Gardai aren’t prosecuted if they’re not directly responsible for any collisions as a result of a pursuit. Otherwise we’ll be forever stuck in this limbo-

Public; Gardai need to arrest these people on scramblers

Gardai; Ok, but what happens if we spot them, turn on the blue lights, they speed off and kill themselves or someone else

Public; You’ll be charged, convicted, lose your job, possibly go to prison. You obviously should’ve known better than to risk people’s lives over a silly teenager just messing about.

Gardai; Right best not to risk chasing them so.

    Public; 😡

  4. >*we need enforcement*

Enforcement isn’t going to happen unless it is given better protection against liability in its efforts to enforce. So perhaps current legislations and/or laws need to be changed to do this(?)

We also need new laws though. Whenever new things come into regular use we need new laws. We can try and fit new situations into old laws but it generally results in failure. Like when we brought in laws for up-skirting and non-consentual sharing of explicit images instead of trying to rely on general harassment law.

I can’t understand why we don’t have static cameras all over the place. My brother was driving me around London last weekend, I really noticed how few people were running red lights or even going above the speed limit compared to just Sligo town and it was because of cameras. Such an easy way to increase enforcement.

The gardai really don’t enforce the laws , there’s no way these bikes would be seen anywhere in other countries the young people would actually be afraid of the consequences. My car was robbed from outside my house , the gardai knew who they were but literally told me there’s no point catching them as they just go back to their Mammy’s as they are too young. I couldn’t believe it why would they not rob a car then nothing happens to them!

  8. I’m not reading passed the headline, because it’s simply perfect.

Friendly recently pointed out that he paid for a ticket in Berlin on the train, but never got checked. Regretted buying one. I explained, the culture in Germany is simply that you do not chance it because the punishment is high.

So we need the strict rules, but we also need to actually follow through on it.

  9. I totally agree, ban fucking „scramblers“ and then not enforce it- yeah, nice band-aid fix 👍

  10. We know bro. You can slow everyone down to 20 kph but if nobody enforces it it doesn’t matter

    This, 💯 this.

The jerk reaction is always to bring in new rules, lower limits, etc. Never any enforcement.

Take speed and alcohol, for example. I’d have to question how many road deaths and accidents are caused by drivers doing 60km/h on a 60km/h road, or drivers who had a glass of wine with their dinner 2 hours ago, that are now prevented by that road dropping from 60 to 50 or the limit dropping by however many milligrams per litre.

I’d be willing to bet that probably 100%, and certainly 90%, of speed and drink related accidents are caused by drivers already breaking the existing, unenforced laws and limits.

Red lights at pedestrian crossings are my pet peeve. Light changes, 4 more cars plough through. They’ll get away with it, why wouldn’t they. Dublin city is particularly bad because when people are sitting in traffic they get more impatient and decide, correctly, that the pedestrians waiting to cross have more to lose than I do so fuck it, they’ll wait for me.

How much would static cameras at traffic junctions cost? Knowing this country we’d find a way to make it cost tens of millions, but in the long run it’d have to be an easier win than hiring, training and paying enough guards to enforce the laws manually.
