TORONTO (AP) — Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Tuesday the country should make “any sacrifice necessary” to preserve the independence of the country in the face of threats from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Harper, a Conservative prime minister for nearly a decade from 2006 to 2015, made the remarks in a speech during his official portrait unveiling.
Harper described the times as perilous and thanked current Prime Minister Mark Carney for attending the unveiling “at a time when challenges are unprecedented during our lives.”
Trump has talked about making Canada the 51st state and has threatened the country with tariffs.
The Republican president’s push to acquire Greenland strained the NATO alliance, alarming Canada, which shares a 3,000-kilometer (1,864 mile) maritime border with Greenland in the Arctic.
Harper didn’t mention Trump by name but urged Canada’s two major parties, the Liberals and Conservatives, to unify in the face of threats to the country’s sovereignty.
“We must make any sacrifice necessary to preserve the independence and the unity of this blessed land,” Harper said.
Says the former Prime Minister who has working tirelessly to push the world further to the right, thus contributing to the exact situation we’re now in where we have to make sacrifices to preserve our independence
# Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
* Canadian and American citizens have been illegally detained by ICE where they are facing inhumane conditions. There have been several deaths while in custody.
* Donald Trump, who is the current American president and chief of it’s army, has threatened to annex Canada. That would violate Canada’s sovereignty and is an act of war.
* America has opened fire on civilian boats near Venezuela resulting in many civilian casualties.
We, the undersigned, **Citizens of Canada**, call upon the **Government of Canada** to immediately declare war against the United States of America. This declaration will protect the citizens of Canada from American aggression while standing up for Canada’s long standing position on human rights. Long term, this declaration will benefit the Canadian economy and Canadians.
Stephen I know this really great volcano you should see.
Credit where credit is due.
Very much „We’re all trying to find the guy who did this“ from Harper, chair of the IDU.
Listen, I’m not disagreeing with the guy, but all these people calling for us to make sacrifices are doing so from their mansions.
These people are not hurting for money. Easy to say this when you’re rich.
Why is this guy in the news again all of a sudden?
Honestly, I disagree.
I wouldn’t sit here and make “any sacrifice necessary” simply to preserve independence from the US. I just don’t care about a post national state that doesn’t care about me.
He is full of it. It is easy to spout this off when you are not in charge and do not have to face the wrath of voters
I never knew the day would come when I agree with Stephen Harper and Jason Kenney.
💯💪 agreed
Imb4 liberals take the opposite position
I love the sentiment.
Will his two adult children apply to the CAF and wear the uniform of our country to defend our sovereignty?
If a PM hasn’t served, and their children don’t serve, sacrifice is an easy word to throw around.
There’s reasons why a lot of conservatives like myself didn’t vote for Harper in his last election.

I agree. We cannot become Americans. Today I heard “don’t want to be an American idiot” by Greenday and it made a lot more sense that it used to.
This is good.
left-wing and right-wing Canadians have far more in common than we have differences. we have a much greater common interest in staying together and keeping our sovereignty in tact rather than being divided and split up by a hostile foreign nation that wants to plunder us.
Nothing good will come for Canadians if we lose our sovereignty.
Kinda telling when even Harper is off the American band wagon. Interesting times..
First time I ever agreed with Stephen Harper.
