It’s good to see a story that didnt start with TRUMP and end in disaster for a change.
      Kids a HERO!

This has fewer upvotes than deserved. If this effort does not get more recognition than some fluffy tweet, then the community at large here is failing society

      Austin Appelbee….Superman.

And the mum is bad ass as well. It amazing keeping the two younger kids safe and afloat for hours.

The rescue services did a great job finding the three of them in the dark.

      What a good news story.

This has put a smile on the face of every West Australian.

    5. In Australia no less. This will absolutely be made into a movie…..that I will not watch because thalassophobia lol That kid is beyond brave.

    6. I don’t care how often this will get posted on reddit because this will never not be amazing to me.

“He said doctors and police officers were jumping up and down with joy.” 😭 😭

      “I didn’t think I was a hero…I just did what I did.” 🫡

Jeez. I guess we all know who’s getting all the university funding in that family.

    9. Did the 13yr old son have life jacket? And in the story, they said the mom could not hear one kid til they turned off the engine as they were slipping away basically. Whose engine was it. Were they on a boat?

I, as an adult, once had to swim 100 yards in a rip to call for help when my cousin and I couldn’t pull my uncle into shore. Lifeguards came and brought them in safely, but after trying to push him to shore in the rip tide and then swimming in myself to get help I was sore for days.

I can’t imagine the fear and pain of swimming that far for that long. Possible by the strength of his own courage.

    11. This kid swam 4 km…

      In a standard pool, that’s 160 laps. In an Olympic pool, it’s 80. 🤯

Someone needs to recommend the Bravery Medal (BM) for this young man.

I honestly can’t think of anything more terrifying. I would probably die of a heart attack just knowing how many sharks could be all around me

What an absolute hero! Good job kid and good job mom for holding onto the other two for hours 9 miles out at sea.

ONE OF? What other hard decisions has she had to make that could rival this one????

    16. >Austin told the ABC he started swimming lessons when he was four and did VacSwim – water safety lessons for children – but had previously found it „quite tiring“ to swim 350 metres without having a break.

What is this VacSwim? Truly remarkable the kid swam more than 10km for help.

    17. Swam 4k and STILL HAD TO GO 2K to get to a phone.

I am dumbfounded and in awe of the strength of this kid.

I hope they keep an eye on his creatine kinase and make sure he makes a full 100% recovery. What an amazing child with the willpower of iron

I’m surprised he didn’t drown with such massive balls. Certified badass!

      Fucking legend.

And his mom is a legend.

      The other kids are legends.

      The rescue are legends.

I’d like more stories about great people like these please.

That young man has grit beyond his years. Props to a real hero.

    22. Why didn’t the hire company raise the alarm when they didn’t return at the end of the hire period? I know people can be late but they were hours and hours late.

Austin is a hero. Great that his mother Joanna asked him to do it.

    23. Headline is misleading. She didn’t ask him to swim for 4 hours. Instead she asked him to paddle to shore in his boat and she didn’t think it would take very long. But it turned out to be very difficult and eventually he decided it was easier to swim
