It all comes from Elchibey’s bridge-building with Turkey when he was in office in 1992-93. Lots of Turkish companies began selling their goods in Azerbaijan, including car manufacturers. Toros and Şahin used to be quite common on Baku’s roads in the 1990s and 2000s, but went extinct in the 2010s because their production ended in Turkey. There’s no information about their sale in Azerbaijan, but I assume they were sold both by official retailers and individual importers.

Yeah, yellow Renaults (and less so Tofaş’s) were very popular among taxi drivers when i was a kid. I guess they got them from Turkey under a cheap & (kind of) reliable car brand. Then they got replaced with old C-class mercedes, followed by the infamous Prius period (before borders closed most Priuses would be bought from Georgia). Now a significant portion of taxi companies rely on Chinese electric cars.
