For context, when they introduced contactless payments in London the TFL quoted that it cost them about £11m to build. I’m sure it cost them more. Probably not £200m more, mind you.

My limit for tap and go is only €50, I’d probably have to call my back for 270 mil.

How in the name of sweet holy Jaysus can it cost that much? And how much did we pay the consultant to come up with that figure.

If you break down the cost:

    – About 265 million pilfered away in public contracts to private companies owned by rich friends of politicians.

    – 5 million to actually implement the contactless payments.

  5. > the project involves the introduction of secure account‑based payments, where fares are calculated retrospectively and charged directly to customers’ bank accounts

It sounds like they’re overcomplicating this from the start, so I’m not surprised it’s not price efficient.

They really shouldn’t need to store bank account details. That honestly worries me in terms of risk of a data breach. If you use Google or apple pay, the merchant doesn’t get your actual card details. Even if they do, you can freeze a card. It’s not easy to freeze a bank account.

  6. I’ll do it for 20k and a statue of me in a scenic location for my civic mindedness – one of those sea facing statues in my image … i get to chose the pose… I don’t ask much 😂🤦‍♂️

  7. Would have to wonder if they just didn’t bother charging for a while how far would that money go.

Contractors lowball public projects. When they win the tender; take advantage of poor contracts, oversight and accountability to add loads of additional costing.
Happens all the time and nothing is learned

Are they inventing a brand new system. This is just nuts. Someone is making tens of millions off this graft.

The Leap card is fine you can top up from your phone, Its very easy to use and you get a better value fare using it. why waste money with contactless payment system.

The old saying „if is not broken don’t fix it comes to mind“

  11. Why can’t we just have a barrier-less system like in Vienna?

Oh right, because we can’t have nice things 🙁

That’s a mad price. Living in Germany and you buy your ticket either from the app, or if you are old school you can buy from a machine. And that’s it, no scanning or contactless machines to deal with. Everyone just gets on the bus, train or ferry and off you go. No queues or waiting.

Considering how under-resourced public transport already is, this seems like it’ll impact the service further by using up funding for additional routes and vehicles, criminal waste of money

  14. I was actually thinking about starting a product based on what I saw in Budapest / Ghent – essentially tap-terminals, similar to what are there already for tipping.

    I wish I had influential friends! 😐 🙁
