      Well it doesn’t take a genius to come to that realization after the Orange Pedo made threats against our country’s sovereignty. Please remember over 30% of the US population voted for him and the other 34~ actively choose to do nothing.

      It will never be the same.

      I think we’ll get back there. It wont be as chummy as before but i hope we get back to a closer relationship. Don’t think it will be anytime soon though.

      * Outgoing Canadian ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman says a “loss in trust” among Canadians with regard to the country’s relationship with the United States won’t be easy to undo.
      * “I think the Canada-U.S. relationship has changed and will not go back to what it was, at least for a very long time, if ever,” Hillman said in an interview with *The West Block* guest host Jackson Proskow.
      * Hillman said she believes the “level of unpredictability” is “greater now” compared with U.S. President Donald Trump’s first term. “There are some foundational aspects of our relationship with the United States and the U.S.’s relationship with the world that are being questioned now in ways that they weren’t in the first term,” she said.

      Good. It’s long past due that Canada takes a step back from American influence and integration.

      I don’t think it should. A lot of the old trade deals were weighted in the USA’s favour. Trump just decided that a deal where the US gets less than 100% is “unfair”, and messed up a sweet deal for them. Now we don’t need to be nice.

      For the future now that we know were the Republicans Stand and every time they are in power cannot trust we need to get out all our eggs from one basket and negotiate with the world 🤗

      Maybe we can figure out a free trade agreement with ourselves…

      Not to mention sort out First Nations and multiple regulatory issues, especially between provinces. We need some national infrastructure for the movement of product east, west, south, and someday north.

      Why in the world would we ever want it to? They are not friends. They are not allies. At best, too many of them see us as a convenience to be toyed around with. At worse, they see us as prey. Sure, it was not always like this. But we live in today’s world and any country whose people elect such a moronic threat to the planet not once but twice (!!) can never be trusted again.

      Short of an apology from the highest level (read: a future president), which will never happen, I will never look at Americans, or America, the same.

      And for what?

      So some fat, orange, asshole can force his fucked up worldview on the rest of us?

      No kidding. 

      Trump’s America is much more of a threat to Canada than even Hillman and other Canadian diplomats and politicians are saying out loud. 

      Canadians better get ready, because the CUSMA review in 2026 is going to be where Trump & Co ratchet up pressure to never before seen levels in order to try and get Canada to capitulate on annexation. 

      If they don’t get what they want (and they won’t) Trump will walk away from CUSMA. Then the real Greenland-style pressure will begin.

      There will be some kind of relationship rebuilt but it will not be the same. When the current arrangements were created the US was relatively stable and the only game in town. They were also negotiated largely in the framework of the pre-internet era where everything was about heavy manufacturing and heavy resources. Now there is China, the internet trade in services and heavy manufacturing is automated. Oh yes, and the US is and partner.

      1. You can’t trust a leader who changes contractual agreements on a whim.
      2. You can’t trust a leader who talks about not just wanting to take over our country, but are enacting policies attacking them economically with no push-back from their government.
      3. You can’t trust a country who would threaten their own allies.
      4. You can’t trust a country not to elect someone like them again in the future.
      5. Everything that’s happened showed just how vulnerable our country really is as it’s too economically tied to the other nation who can go hostile at any time.

      I agree, both sides of the political spectrum have gone full neo left and right. I’m embarrassed by the state of our country. 25 years ago when I started voting people would easily agree to disagree. Hey your left I’m right whatever. Now if you’re a conservative you’re a Nazi and if you’re a liberal you’re a simple jack communist. We’ll never go back to non-neo whatever side politics.

      It will never go back to way it was, but the tensions will cool down for sure with a sane president if fair elections are held again in the states, all people want is for tensions to lower and cool down, diversification of the economy and trade will continue no matter who comes into office on both sides of the border.
