  1. Weng, a professor of chemistry, chemical biology and bioengineering at Northeastern University, bioengineered a way of producing withanolides, the compounds responsible for ashwagandha’s benefits, in yeast. Published recently in [Nature Plants](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41477-026-02220-z), it’s a “revolutionary” finding, Weng said, that creates a maximally efficient withanolide factory and opens the door to tapping into ashwagandha’s true potential.

“In the future, we can foresee that we don’t have to grow the plants to get withanolides,” Weng said. “We can simply engineer and optimize this yeast strain to produce the very precise analog we want. Then it really opens the doors for all kinds of drug discovery research in the future.”

The research-backed benefits of ashwagandha include lowering stress and anxiety and improving sleep, according to the NIH. But Weng said it also has the potential to reduce inflammation and assist with cancer therapy.

  2. Like all supplements, be careful with it. In some people it can cause severe depression and suicidal ideation.

  3. How strong is the effect on sleep? Like is it one of those things where 1 out of 100 people report slightly better sleep and for 99 out of 100 it makes no difference? Because I’ve tried it and as far as I can tell it made no difference. But obviously I can’t be sure that without it I wouldn’t have maybe slept even worse.

I’m an ICU nurse. We recently had a patient at work who died from liver failure after taking ashwagandha from an online vendor.

Please consult a doctor before taking supplements, and make sure you’re getting them from a reputable source.

  5. The first time I tried it, my brain felt like it was in bubble wrap! It just felt protective! My job was causing me stress, and it helped me feel better.

It’s one of those ‚take as needed ‚ and not to take daily in a supplement routine.

This presents the same problems as medical cannabis. Its not clear which compounds are the medicinal ones nor what controls how much is in each plant compared to its neighbors. So one plant could do wonders, whereas the next is wntirely worthless and this is easily magnifies if the worthless plant is choosen to cultivate because it grows faster or has other traits farmers like.

  7. „We report the case of a 20-year-old male who presented with tachycardia, insomnia, and symptoms of anxiety following abrupt discontinuation of ashwagandha extract (600 mg/day)“

[Unmasking Potential Withdrawal Effects of Ashwagandha: A Case Report and Review](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12139691/)

I’m linking this case because I’ve had similar effects after discontinuing a 400mg/day two month usage that was helping me with anxiety attacks because of high demand at work. after discontinuing and going cold turkey, I’ve suffered way more severe anxiety episodes than the ones i was having before taking the supplement. the withdrawal symptoms went away after a couple of weeks. my diet was already clean and balanced, even before I’ve started taking the supplement.

Use of ashwagandha as a supplement is banned in Denmark due to its potential for inducing involuntary abortions (among other things).
