He can fcuk off
It won’t stop them and just exasperate the culture in this country that we don’t enforce the laws we have.
Should apply to some adults as well 😂
Great all for it….. Just don’t use it as a false flag to try bring in Digital ID.
I support the idea but Ireland doesn’t enforce its laws, so it would be up to the social media platforms. Although they have been fairly efficient abroad
This is a net positive decision.
However, on a side note, it is important to offer younger people an incentive or other opportunities to stay connected outside of social media in an ever-growing online, technology dependant world.
Or you will end up with an ever-growing isolated younger generation, which is not good.
EDIT:
You can do this without the introduction of digital ID
Simple example: ID verification is needed to access porn sites in the UK to prove you are over 18.
Very simple deterrent.
So if the age was set to that you have to be over 18 (just an example), then you would need a valid ID to verify your age to have an account.
No, it’s not perfect.
VPN’s, sharing accounts & so on.
But it is a good incentive.
80% of social media is brain rot.
I’ll just say i’m glad my grew up in 90’s & early 2000’s because FUCK being a kid in this day & age with all these platforms along with the pressures that naturally come with growing up in the real world.
Get ready for the necessity of digital IDs. They will bring them in and we will really have to boycot them heavily.
Nanny state.
To what age, and how does he define „social media“?
Every time he brings this up, the only reasonable response is „EU Digital Wallet, with support for Open Source Secure Enclaves as well as proprietary ones“.
It’s a sledgehammer to solve a thumbtack, I grant. But we’re going to need it soon enough anyway, to disentangle our financial sector from the US payment providers, which we have to do.
And it grants the ability to generate Zero Knowledge Proofs.
While I don’t necessarily agree with age restriction on social media use, I’ve seen the journal papers comparing it to drug addiction and I just don’t know. But until we have the EU Digital Wallet implemented, it’s *just not safe* to create a centralised repository of identifications. It’s just not. It will get hacked because the information is incredibly valuable and the Irish government are not interested in best practice solutions. We saw this with Eircode.
Good. The French introduced similar this week.
It’s hard to argue with the logic of this. It’s a good idea and Australia were trailblazers for doing it first. France are seriously considering it too. Social media has gotten awful now. It’s no longer a fun, benign place to keep in touch. It’s all about selling you shit and trying to covert you to a particular way of thinking. Enrage to Engage as I call it. It certainly not healthy. And Snapchat is one of the worst for teens. That seems to be used by peado’s for grooming as many of the cases of that I read about Snapchat is more often then not mentioned.
App Stores and the platforms themselves need to age gate apps and content. There’s no need for under 16s to be on social media.
That and parents / guardians should not be allowed to post their kids till they’re deemed old enough to consent.
I support this. But there needs to be part of wider regulation of social media.
Its clear algorithmic social media has rotted the minds of many adults too.
Soundbite Simon strikes again.
What is the outworking of an age restriction on social media?
Those of us above the age will be required to verify our identity to use (for now, certain parts of) the internet.
And let’s be real. 15 year olds these days can easily get a VPN. They’re very cheap. And they’ll use the cheapest ones, potentially exposing themselves to who knows what.
Are we going to need to ID verify to buy or use a VPN next? (Where does that end?)
Why don’t we actually regulate social media and hold these very large online platforms to account as publishers?
Trampling on civil liberties is easier I suppose.
Social media needs as much attention and legislation as other addictive life ruining things
VPN companies love this
It doesn’t even work. It’s failed in Australia, they’re still on the internet
At this point we can’t trust social media companies to regulate themselves.
Okay cool then you go to schools and register them, you don’t use it as an excuse to collect everyone’s data letting private companies have it. Doing god knows what with or as a way to make sure people aren’t getting informed or speaking their minds.
If it’s about protecting kids then you will register those in school and let them opt out at 18… but we all know it’s not really about that.
