      Kim Yeongmi is probably the best conflict journalist Korea has produced. Still remember her journalism and stories about Taliban Afghanistan.

      Anyways, the behind-the-scene story she said about NK POWs has sparked a small debate. Apparently, they are POWs under Ukrainian custody. And Ukrainian authorities want POWs exchanged – in this case with Ukrainians under Russian custody. NK POWs are special because Russians don’t prioritize or care about captured NK soldiers, and POWs themselves don’t want to be exchanged, as it means their certain death by the NK regime (as addressed in the full interview). Instead, they want (at leas the older one certainly wants) defection to SK. SK doesn’t have any Ukrainian POWs to exhchange. So what it means is that Ukrainian authorities are willing to have high-level talks with SK for some sort of deal in exchange for these NK POWs. The debate is what SK government should do.

      a korean here, one thing to consider is that, even if a prisoner exchange were to happen, South Korea should not end up getting entangled in the RU war as a result. In a situation where a prisoner-for-prisoner exchange cannot take place, the problem seems to be ‚how do we assess the value of two human lives?‘ If Ukraine demands sky-high supplies and support on the grounds of human lives, Russia could use this as a pretext, claiming ‚South Korea has supported Ukraine.‘ Given that North Korea has officially acknowledged sending troops to Russia, I’m concerned that this could be interpreted as ‚North Korea participating in the war by supporting Russia‘ versus ‚South Korea supporting Ukraine‘. Nevertheless, there’s no disagreement that we should try the best possible method to bring them to South Korea
