Thailand, surprisingly, has [one of the loosest gun laws in Asia](https://archive.ph/cPyw8). Civilians can buy almost all types of shotguns, bolt-action rifles, and pistols (except for full-auto or anything above .460 Steyr) if they have a license (including self-defense). Semi-auto rifles are restricted to .22 LR. These [groups possess SPAS-12s, Mosin-Nagants, and even High Standard Model 10](https://www.reddit.com/r/Myanmarcombatfootage/comments/1qhb94t/archival_high_standard_model_10_and_spas12/). The Mosin can be bought at a Thai gun shop.

I do not know for sure why they use Type 63s or Ppshs so much or where they come from. Type 63s are comparatively rare as opposed to the SKS. My personal hypotheses are that they were somehow smuggled from Laos, Cambodia, or Vietnam; Shan groups within Burma sold them to groups like KNLA who then passed them on; the last hypothesis is that they and the Ppshs were leftovers of Thailand’s Communist insurgency.
