Millions of people around the world are creating and sharing deepfake nudes on the secure messaging app Telegram, a Guardian analysis has shown, as the spread of advanced AI tools industrialises the online abuse of women.
The Guardian has identified at least 150 Telegram channels – large encrypted group chats popular for their secure communication – that appear to have users in many countries, from the UK to Brazil, China to Nigeria, Russia to India. Some of them offer “nudified” photos or videos for a fee: users can upload a photo of any woman, and AI will produce a video of that woman performing sexual acts. Many more offer a feed of images – of celebrities, social media influencers and ordinary women – made nude or made to perform sexual acts by AI. Followers are also using the channels to share tips on available deepfake tools.
While there have long been Telegram channels dedicated to distributing non-consensual nude images of women, the widespread availability of AI tools means anyone can instantly become the subject of graphic sexual content viewable by millions.
On a Russian-language Telegram channel advertising deepfake “blogger leaks” and “celebrity leaks”, a post about an AI nudification Telegram bot promised “a neural network that doesn’t know the word ‘no’”.
“Choose positions, shapes and locations. Do everything with her that you can’t do in real life,” it said.
Yuck! I fucking hate this timeline!
Super cool how they dumped these tools into the lap of the public without any regard for safety or greater impact to society, particularly the labor market and accelerating inequality. Externalize the costs, privatize the profit. Well, they haven’t figured out the second part, yet, and if how they’ve stewarded the tech so far is any sign, hopefully they never do.
Yeah, because there is no porn on the internet so people obviously feel the need to make some.
Let’s see if this makes as many headlines as Grok. Guarantee it won’t.
I don’t know why people like this dog shit. It’s infiltrated all my favorite sites already. It’s probably good for people that have had authentic leaks though. Now they’ll be buried underneath an avalanche of AI nonsense and nobody will ever see it.
I stayed on Twitter after the take-over and it is really just a cesspit now. Not surprised by this headline.
To be fair though you can niche out an old twitter sorta experience there with passive work like blocking and muting alot of words.
Overall though I would be ok with it being banned all together.
Telegram is, by more accounts than you can shake a poisoned umbrella at, a Kremlin-adjacent snake pit: a digital sewer where the far right’s exhausted greatest hits are endlessly recycled and sold as daringly “radical”, while criminals, cranks and assorted online kooks slink about in full daylight.
Hardly a shock, then, that the platform now cheerfully enables AI image manipulation and non-consensual alterations – tech-bro nihilism repackaged as innovation, with dignity and privacy tossed on the bonfire like last season’s morals.
BBC Panorama [(link)](https://www.reddit.com/r/northernireland/s/nPhhNk7n9Y)took a cold, forensic look at Telegram’s inner workings last year, and the result was genuinely chilling: not so much the future of free speech as its mugging in a dark alley.
It should also be noted, telegram are no strangers to these things. French authorities indicted its founder on a number of charges a year or so ago..
>Complicity in criminal activity – accused of enabling wrongdoing by failing to curb or prevent it on the platform.
>Complicity in the distribution of child sexual exploitation material – linked to the spread of illegal imagery.
>Drug trafficking-related offences – tied to the use of Telegram for coordinating illicit drug commerce.
>Fraud-related offences — involving alleged misuse or criminal facilitation through Telegram.
>Failure to respond to lawful judicial authorities – accused of refusing to cooperate properly with French probes into misuse of the app.
These charges stem from claims that Telegram’s content moderation – or lack thereof – and Durov’s handling of law enforcement requests allowed a range of serious crimes to be planned, coordinated, or enabled on the platform.
Taken together and factoring in the latest venture into ai powered image manipulation without important safeguards. Highly questionable platform with a curious indifference to various strands of dangerous criminality and exploitation.
IMO (which is worth a cup of coffee at 7-11 lol) those that allowed this to happen need to be held accountable criminally. What’s the punishment for filming a woman illegally in the bathroom or dressing room in a public or private building? And the punishment for creating CSAM? There ya go. Time for a class action lawsuit as well. Surprised it hasn’t happened yet. Once it started, they should have shut down that capability period not used it to create a profit. They all bragged about how great AI is and THIS is what they gave us?
The crock of Grok.
