God these newspapers know how to get people riled up for clicks
Personally though I was pinned down to the ground buying a flat white this morning, the barista screamed and tried to force my hand to hit the 15% tip button, I just about managed to get off the 0% button and got the hell out of there

It should be fucking outlawed honestly. Sitting idly by while more and more of the responsibility for making hospitality a viable job gets shifted onto the consumer.
I understand you can just not tip, but it is a deliberate guilt trip everywhere you go.

I don’t tip, I pay all service fees, all technology fees, all delivery fees, and more.
I am not going to tip because that’s employer’s responsibility.

I always leave tips, but I 100% agree that’s becoming less voluntary. Been to a couple of restaurants recently where service was already added to the bill.

Tipping has always been normal in restaurants. Always. In other service industries it’s occasional and not expected.
Why people get so wound up about this is beyond me. Grow a pair, tap the „no tip“ button and get on with your day.

Well let’s be real here for a second. It’s already expensive enough going out to eat in this economy for the majority of people. A lot more people would tip if they got rid of the insane VAT. I paid €7 on top of a meal (would just cost €50 without) for a single person alone because of VAT.

I don’t tip, Im not going to incentivize employers paying employees less than bare minimum because the customer is going to make up for it

Also when did the standard tip go from 10% to 15% or 25%? This isn’t America where servers don’t get paid outside of tips.
Fullofbewilderment on
In America their wages are deducted to take account of service so tips are what they take home, it is shocking. Our minimum wage has continually increased over the past few years (unlike a lot of the wages above it) so it is not comparable at all. I have worked a lot of shitty service industry jobs so have always been pro-tipping but it does feel increasingly forced and having to tip on an already expensive breakfast or lunch that was dropped down to the table rather than for excellent service over dinner does put me off eating out as much as I used to
BitTasty4101 on
I never ever tip unless the service has been exemplary. Nobody should be feeling forced to press the tip percentage buttons when paying with cards. I always appreciate a waitress by passing this on the pay system instead of putting me in the position to have to consider it. People are flat broke and pay a fair chunk for food and service regardless.
Behemothslayer on
If the service was good at a restaurant/bar I will leave a cash tip for the staff of about 10%. I’m not leaving a tip if it’s on the card machine or some disguised service bullshit and you are making it awkward to say no. I will ask to have it removed, much to the embarrassment of the missus

A lot of restaurants are now using payment screens that have preset tip amounts that starts at 10% and go up from there. The “skip” button is tiny.
I don’t mind tipping and more often than not, I will tip – but it should be for the specific person that served me if I feel their service was particularly good – not an expectation.
This isn’t the US, minimum wage is liveable here – in the US it’s so low that you’re literally impoverished without tips.

I used to tip most of the time at a local cafe I go to. They updated their systems two summers ago and they put this tip machine at the till that takes a euro the moment you put your card near it, obviously designed to make you automatically reach for it thinking you’re paying for everything, but it’s a different machine that is behind the counter for paying. I tapped that thing and it took the euro, I used to tip more than a euro, as in I’d give whatever coins I had to the tip jar and mostly that was more than a euro. But anyways I never tipped there again after that. I actually sorta stopped going there altogether

I find the topic of tipping a tough one. If I get decent, good or amazing service in a restaurant I throw the server a fiver regardless of what the bill is, 30EUR or 100EUR I will give a fiver. For someone who is self employed like a taxi man, my beautician or aesthetician I tend not to tip but might give a gift and or some cash at Xmas. I always give my hairdresser a fiver, on rare occasion we get Deliveroo or Just Eat delivery a euro or 2 if I have it, which I find annoying as I have paid delivery and service charge. I tend to think of the person in front of me and how much a fiver would help them. My aesthetician charging me 600EUR for an hours work is sure as sh!t not getting a tip off me every time. A hairdresser getting paid for how many heads they do or minimum wage, what is a fiver on top of the price of a WC&BD!?
