Czech President Petr Pavel accused the nation’s foreign minister of engaging in potential extortion over the head of state’s [refusal to appoint](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-01-09/czech-president-cites-racism-in-refusal-to-appoint-key-minister) a candidate from the cabinet minister’s party to the government.
Pavel, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, said Foreign Minister Petr Macinka sent text messages to his main adviser over his refusal to appoint Filip Turek. Pavel said he found the exchanges unacceptable and will seek a legal assessment on their nature.
Macinka rejected the accusation, saying his comments were within the boundaries of political discourse. Prime Minister Andrej Babis urged both parties to “calm emotions.”
Pavel has for months refused to appoint Turek to a cabinet post, saying the lawmaker had a track record of trivializing Nazi-era atrocities and downplaying hate crimes. Macinka’s Motorists — a climate-skeptic grouping — have insisted on the appointment, saying Turek is the party’s key representative and has voter support.
“I can say for myself that I am not subject to any intimidation and I will continue to be guided primarily by the constitution and the interests of the Czech Republic,” Pavel said.
He’s an idiot, but I wouldn’t call him pro-russian…
WTF is going on with these labels? Prorussian this, prorussian that, everybody that does not agree with me is prorussian.
Srsly, Turek may be controversial, a nazi symbol-adoring man-child with many scandals. You can say a lot and be correct, yet you still chose the wrong label, why?
European politics lately feels less like chess and more like a mafia movie script.
Turek is definitely pro-Russian not because he’s an idiot I do not agree with but because every interview where ukraine came up resulted in a lot of statements that could be summarized with “it’s nato’s fault”.
He’s also collecting nazi memorabilia, wrote nazi shit multiple times on his socials, and is photographed doing nazi salutes.
Bud definitely not a nazi or pro russian, just because he does nazi stuff and has russian talking points does not mean he’s any of those things, because we’re all stupid you see.
Oh, wow, that was unexpected.
Macinka’s Motorists with a guy called Turek in a government with a Japanese guy and a prime minister who is Slovak extorting the president called Petr Pavel. I don’t know, descriptions of Czech politics always sound so funny to me, even the scandals sound like a joke.
have these czech politicians forgotten about the prague spring? so much for having the russians as allies
