No need to ‚dream‘, just continue on the path that Europe is already on and independence will inevitably be the result. It’s not reality yet, but it will be in not so distant future.

Rutte needs to say these things I guess, even if he’s been overdoing the sycophancy routine for „daddy“ Trump a bit. Oh well, as long as it buys Europe the time that it needs I couldn’t care less.

  2. IndubitablyNerdy on

In the short term he is correct, although he could have said it differently and with less sycophancy toward trump especially given what the latter thinks about NATO and its role.

Hopefully we will eventually be able to decouple enough in time though, especially if we turn all the recent ‚realizations‘ into action, but this is going to take years, if not decades, we should have started working on more strategic independence during Trump first mandate, or even earlier, perhaps during the annexation of Crimea or during the arab spring, but alas…

  3. Europe should not dream about anything, but start rolling up its sleeves and taking action to solve problems.

and as long as people like him and a few other Europeans are in high positions, who only talk, Europe will never get to the point where anyone takes it seriously.

Rutte has been very sloopy in his communication. He should be removed ASAP

We have nukes, carriers and a decent enough army that the USA certainly won’t invade unless they are ready to pay a horrible blood price. I’m pretty sure the USA won’t move a finger if we start a real war with Russia, too. So, what’s left ? The USA can destroy the world 150 times, we can only do it 5 but spoiler, once is enough.

    >!Definitely not what she said!<

I’m guessing he was referring to nuclear defense and deterrence. The Europeans can fight, no doubt about that. Poo Poo does NOT want a conventional fight with Europe.

The kissing of the ring (ass) of the current occupant of the White House is a sure path toward being steam rolled by US policy. The EU should be acting as if they’re dealing with Putin when dealing with Trump because the reality is that they’re basically the same person, however Trump remains (for now) somewhat constrained by the US Constitution.

It is time for Rute to go away… He looks like american and not european.

    >Without U.S. support, European nations would be required to massively ramp up their defense spending to 10% of their GDP. NATO allies pledged to spend 5% of their GDP on defense last year on defense by 2035. Likewise, Europe would be forced to spend billions of dollars to create a new nuclear deterrent, absent the U.S.

    >“In that scenario, you will lose the ultimate guarantor of our freedom, which is the U.S. nuclear umbrella. So hey, good luck,“ Rutte said.

We’re all riding a big wave of national pride and righteous indignation.

Rutte is a slimy fucker, but what exactly is he or Zelensky for that matter wrong about, ffs we’re not even able to help Ukrain four years after the russian began fucking them over.

It will take sacrifice and commitment to gain our independence.

Pretending we can win with speeches and pride alone is like pissing yourself to stay warm, it only works for a second and then they call HR, again.

  10. This administration is the reason I don’t believe in natural selection because it’s amazing they’re honestly still alive. It’s like they don’t understand the point of all this was WE help each other, literally the easiest thing to comprehend, it’s what we learn in 2nd grade. Instead they just look at dollars and think everything is a business, good thing all these guys ran failing businesses smh what a joke

I can’t wait until 🇺🇲 we stop being a world fucking superpower. I’m tired, boss.

Every time I hear we need US security, I ask myself „security from what?“.
The answer inevitably comes: „from what the US would do to you if you would not be dependent on it’s security“.

I mean, I understand that he wants to keep NATO together, but these were poorly chosen words.

Rusia can’t win a war against Ukraine in more than 4 years. And Ukraine is not France, or the UK, with all my respect to brave Ucranians. Russia almost lost when part of the Russian army marched to Moscow two years ago. If Europe went to war against Russia, Putin wouldn’t last a week. So, no, Rutte, WE are Not afraid of Russia.

Cue the usual breakdancing in the comments to explain how anything Rutte says is actually brilliant.

  16. rutte is so bad at this point i think iohannis would’ve done a better job.

granted, he’d always be away on holiday in private jets. but at least he’d shut up.

  17. Maptwopointoh on

Pretty sure he will find a way to say that his words were misunderstood and misquoted and he actually meant something else.

  18. the praise for rutte on reddit is insane.

probably the WORST secretary general NATO has ever seen, but yeah, as long as it works and he keeps kissing daddy’s ass.

    get a grip, guys.

  19. Altruistic-Medium-23 on

This guy is so far up trump’s ass that he’s legally considered internal organs

  20. whocares_honestly on

The whole point of his venue was to ask EU to renounce on „buy EU“ plan for rearmament.

„The EU should also not exclude U.S. weapons firms from the €90 billion loan for Ukraine, the former long-serving Dutch prime minister said“.

  21. spidereater on

Apparently America funds 16% of NATO funding. That seems like with America they would have 84% of funding. I think they could survive that.

  22. General_Vanilla1892 on

I partially understand the need to sweettalk US/Trump trying to save whatever’s left of the alliance.. But i really dont understand why he in the process constantly needs to stomp all over EU..

  23. jazzdevildddd on

Hearing a former Prime Minister of an important EU member state express himself like this in the European Parliament of all places makes you wonder how loyalties change. He can’t expect to pass that serious a message by belittling Europe.

  24. An advice to Rutte and his communications department:
This particular statement could have been re-phrased in a more diplomatic way.Rutte should focus on sounding more statesmanlike and not like the typically Dutch way of sounding like he is the most popular guy in the classroom. And something else: stop saying “listen” every time you start a sentence. If you need a role model observe Mr. Carney and Mr. Stubb more closely.

  25. samuel10998 on

He might be the biggest Trump dick sucker there is. Even tho I found it cringe Newsom giving away all the knee pads at that Swiss event as a joke, this guy deff deserved it.

  26. Don’t worry guys, you’re allowed to be direct and honest. He’ll have no active memory of it before long.

  27. ElevatorSecret7133 on

So let me get this straight.
We Europeans have to manage our own defense (because the United States explicitly says it won’t guarantee to protect us), but can’t we manage our own defense?
