Am I missing something? If food sales tax were set to 0%, couldn’t izakayas and other restaurants buy food at a lower cost, meaning they could just reduce the costs without it affecting the bottom line? Or are restaurants exempt / follow a different bracket when it comes to sales tax?

  4. The consumption tax on ingredients will drop to zero, and since restaurant workers‘ families will also benefit from lower food costs, this is likely just political propaganda. Besides, it’s worth looking at how other countries approach food-related taxes. If Japan were the only one doing this, the criticism might hold weight, but it’s not exactly an unusual policy on a global scale.
