  1. I like to think of these as self-sanctions: thank you Donald Trump for sanctioning the US for being a rogue state.

  2. Trump’s cholesterol is high and that’s a good thing for the rest of the world. Now it’s just the waiting game.

100% tarriffs on Canada would be so bad for the US if I were Canada I would let it happen.

Decades of Republican efforts to undermine fuel efficiency standards, environmental standards, and advanced technologies in the form of electric vehicles, storage, and green energy generation, have put the US auto industry very much on the back foot.

It really goes to show the differences between the two political parties.

Democrats encourage innovation, research, development, and forward advancement so that products become *more desirable and competitive*.

Republicans on the other hand simply try to force everyone to buy what already exists. They remove worker protections and incentives to innovate allowing companies to raise margins and profitability. That sort of extreme protectionism very often makes you *less competitive*.

Trump’s massive taxes on import goods doesn’t make US products better or more desirable either it just makes better alternatives less affordable. Great if you are a domestic industry only selling into the domestic market but every year you become *less competitive globally*.

The Republican solution to that, apparently, is to try and strongarm countries into buying certain things. Once again policy follows force. That is not going to work. Canadians do not want shit cars. They do not want expensive cars. They do not want polluting cars.

The only people who seem to want expensive, polluting, unreliable cars are Trump supporters who will buy them as a projection of loyalty and group belonging. But they aren’t going to keep an industry afloat. In fact their support of Trump’s policies may just cost the US auto industry well [over 100,000 jobs](https://www.forbes.com/sites/margooge/2025/04/02/130000-auto-jobs-lost-by-2030–repealing-the-inflation-reduction-act/) in the coming years.

Canada, like China, India, the EU, Australia, Africa and *everywhere else*, want to have affordable and reliable cars which are cheap to run and maintain. That means electric cars, it means cars with advanced batteries, cars made in advanced factories. This also contributes to demand for home solar/batteries.

Where is the US in these markets? Tells me, Trump supporters, how competitive will the US be after another three years of Trump’s ‚protectionism‘ ?

He seems to be very concerned about a country that is completely unnecessary to the U.S.

  9. How about we just ignore this petulant child’s inane dribble? Just collectively keep doing our thing and let him holler into the wind and rage tweet into the abyss without response?

“Don’t trade with anyone but me! Also if you trade with me I will tariff you! Also if you deal with me I will break the deal at any moment and I’ll scam you! Grrr!”

There’s no diplomatic clash at all really…. Carney would have to care for it to be a clash. 🤷‍♂️

  12. Canada should halt all shipments to america and halt the power line workers from helping.

  13. Elbows up Canada (coming from an American). At this point everyone should just ignore him or call him out. Hell, throw some export tariffs on your lumber and watch states like Florida squirm

Bah. Nobody cares. Tariff away Tariff Boy. Also, suck my balls Tariff Boy. You’re done at the midterms. Idiot.

  15. Why not focus on domestic matters at home for a change – like murdering your own Citizens and that sort of thing?

PM Carney succinctly says exactly what this trade deal between Canada/China means, which has nothing to do with the CUSMA agreement whatsoever. Carney made a deal with China that not only opens a market for a small amount of China’s EV’s introduced to Canada, but also takes tremendous pressure off of the Canadian canola/fisheries that can resume exporting to China. There are still tariffs happening from both sides, but tariffs for canola eg. to China will drop from 84% to 15% .Trump’s going to crow that Canada backed off because of his 100% tariff threats, when in fact his histrionics were, once again, based on falsehoods. If he chooses to slap those tariffs on Canada, so be it.

  17. Whenever foreign politicians refer to the tariffs they should describe them as “tariffs on American citizens”. Since their own government won’t tell them. Repeat till it sinks in.

  18. As I Canadian I hope Carney tells Trump to fuck off. Call his bluff! Let him try it and all the businesses that his billionaire buddies own will suffer and he will reverse course almost immediately. Nevermind the fact that given recent events the EU and China would happily back us up.

So fun fact, firms are scrambling to begin planning around divestment from American it and service providers. The federal gov is quietly pivoting to supports for these changed built around new programs to help absorb the public service staff who are being cut.

The shift is significant because we buy so much software and services from the USA.

It’ll hurt but the pivot will work? And the rule to sustain the will be long lasting.

Also if you’re an American healthcare worker we need you:

Just do it then idiot. I hope Canada seeks out favourable trade deals with other countries and stops trade with the US altogether. Fuck these people.
