Registering a boat never used to be a big deal. When you do register/license a boat, it triggers the CRA to send you a letter asking for a hst payment. It’s tax enforcement disguised as safety/environmentalism.

  2. Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t they already do this in like 2006 and then at some point undo it?

  3. For context, this is not a licence to drive a boat (Pleasure Craft Operator Card). This is the boat’s equivalent to a licence plate – the letters and numbers visible on the bow of the boat. Basically you have to pay every 5 years to confirm that you still own your boat, as opposed to now, where it is for as long as you own it. If this extra money actually achieves its stated goal then great but this does smell like a blatant cash grab.

It is a big issue in Vancouver. Abandoned yachts and sailboats end up washed on the beaches and they have a hard time finding the owners to pay the cleanup fees or dock fees.

So if I’m reading this correctly, currently registered boats will now have an expiry, but not immediately; with many boats years >2000 being several years out.

  6. Owning and maintaining a boat is already pretty expensive 24$ over 5 yrs is like the cost of lunch for a fishing trip with a buddy.

I’ve only registered my boat once and got a hit with a sales tax bill that eventually go put on my property taxes.

I’ll never register again and never been asked for it in 30yrs.

Another stupid Liberal BS plan. This will have 0 impact on derelict and abandoned boats. Most of the people abandoning boats aren’t getting them registered in the first place.
