There are no good reasons for Alberta separating. They are not a nation, they don’t represent a distinct culture, and the province was created by Canada on treaty lands. If some Albertans want to join the US so much, they should emigrate to America. They don’t have the right to dismember the country because they don’t like the federal government.

    Edit: Grammar

  2. Separating sounds great until literally any of their promises are challenged, then people quickly realize it’s not as good as it sounds.

Especially for Alberta. An independent Alberta would essentially be a vassal state of Canada, completely dependent on Canada for trade, protection, financial markets, etc

  3. afriendincanada on

Sounds like some of my peers. They think it’s a smart idea to load up the separation gun and point it to try to force a better deal with the Feds. Absolutely no foresight.

  4. KingRabbit_ on

    >Ipsos said while 91 per cent of the committed separatists feel Alberta is deeply alienated from Canada, they acknowledged policy reforms could help.

Pretty much shows the support here is an inch deep.

If you’re a passionate, committed separatist you yearn for independence regardless of what kind of change in policy happens in the future. When you’re just playing around and LARPing about it, you start with the position of „…but I could be talked out of it.“

    >The poll suggests 800,000 of Alberta’s five million people are truly ready to consider independence, while the other 4.2 million are not.

Do you think it might lead to the media giving a smaller voice to what is obviously a fringe then, you know, as responsible journalists who….ha ha ha ha. Sorry, I couldn’t get through that with a straight face. I tried.

Can we stop blowing this horn? It’s a skeleton population that want to talk seriously about separation. We are giving this US talking piece so much more credibility than it’s earned in real life. 🤦‍♀️

    >Only 15 to 16 per cent of Albertans and Quebecers maintained their support after considering possible downsides such as standard of living declines, pension losses or trade renegotiations.

Alberta would become a landlocked petro state. Best case scenario, they’re seized as an American territory and sell their oil at a steep discount. Most likely scenario, a serious effort to separate spooks investors and oil production stutters out while political games play out. [Quebec saw this impact their economy back in the referendum days and it took years to recover.](https://www.iedm.org/50300-quebec-shows-neverendum-economic-impact/) And their economy was much more diverse and less dependent on exports than Alberta’s current situation. How many Albertans will stick around if oil companies aren’t hiring? Some of us are old enough to remember how many Berta plates were rolling around the East Coast after the 2014 oil crash.

This is dumb and people on the right who keep fostering it are playing with fire.

  7. How many of those polled understand that separation would mean annexation by the US? Maybe they do understand, and that’s what they want…?

  8. Longjumping-Ad-7310 on

Its a talk made and pushed by us to destabilize Canada geopolitically

Any Alberta separation = **illegal, unconstitutional, and treaty violation**

**Separatists are foreign-aligned actors.** Its annoying that this isnt the main article.

  9. I think it is in western provinces best interest to leave Canada. I love Canada, own a ton of cbc and Canadiana inspired clothes and memorabilia

But as a British Columbian I see the land claim bonanza occurring here and in New Brunswick and Quebec will ultimately harm the greater good for all.

I think I am early to this way of thinking but that it is growing.

  10. This is similar to what happened in Quebec in ‘95. Parizeau was devastated by the loss while Bouchard felt that although the yes side lost, the tight result sent a clear message to the federal government. he didn’t lose sleep over the No victory.

I’m sorry to say this but as an Albertan, there is a LOT of brainrot and zero education here. You’ll find an inverse relationship with education (aka actually understanding what they are proposing) and willingness to separate.

Nowadays we demonize education because it makes controlling the cattle (us) harder.

It seems like all the die hard separatists share the “burn it all down” mentality of MAGA supporters. I’m not saying separatists are MAGA supporters (though I imagine there’s a lot of overlap in that Venn diagram), but both groups have a strong desire to form new countries/governments in their image. At the same time, both groups haven’t really thought that far ahead and don’t appreciate the risks underlying their own desires.

“You live in one of the safest, richest, most stable countries on Earth:

    Clean water

    Free healthcare

    No war

    Passport that opens 180+ countries

    Rights people literally die for

And you still wake up every day like:
“Yeah but Canada is a dystopian hellscape.”

My brother in maple syrup, the only thing dystopian is your algorithm.
if Canada is “the worst country ever” then why do you refuse to leave?
Oh right, because deep down you know it’s elite, and complaining is your only hobby.

    You’re not oppressed.
You’re bored and addicted to outrage.

    There’s a difference.”

  14. It’s a very simple cause/effect in Albertans’ minds.

Since the PQ formed, Alberta has been hating Quebec for getting what AB feels is a disproportionate share of federal support. They attribute that support to the threat of Quebec leaving and so now they want to do the same strategy. “Give me lots of goodies or I’ll leave”.

Everything the feds do for AB is disregarded. Every ill their provincial government does on them they claim the feds are at fault.

Albertans continually bitching about being left out, while doing nothing to fix it, will always be insane. They are a weaker Quebec.

Quebec wanted to be heard, so they made their own political party that competes federally. After a decade of unrest, they voted on separation. It failed. Waited 15 years, and then tried again. It failed. Haven’t done it since.

Alberta wanted to be heard. Voted the same way for decades. Sucked off American interests. Got mad over a needle. And now is voting for separation. Couldn’t even

Part of me wants it to succeed and then go to shit, but I know the Americans will swoop in to scoop it up as another territory, and I hate American expansion more than Albertan Exceptionalism. Rock and a hard place, for sure.

It’s a ballot box not an anger management tool. If you don’t actually want to separate buy a stress ball or support/run for a pro-Alberta federal party that advocates for greater independence, Bloq style.

  17. Bikin4Balance on

Misleading, clickbaity headline suggests half of Albertana, rather than half of that 30%, which is ~ 15%. I know most of us here get that but many in general public won’t, and this inflates angst about a relatively small percentage who are always yapping about that

I have a question that might sound silly but I’m wondering of its legal ramifications:

Can someone who has the dual citizenship Canada-United States vote for a referendum asking for Alberta to separate from Canada when the explicit goal from those who organized the referendum is to actually join the United States?

Why should someone who has the nationality of another country be allowed to vote on such an issue?

I know that the referendum question doesn’t say anything about joining the US but it seems that many of those voting to leave Canada are willing to merge with the US. Even though Smith says she doesn’t want to, her actions point in the other direction.

Also, anyone know who Mitch Sylvestre (the organizer of the referendum) really is and where he is from? I cannot find any info about his origins (nor does ChatGPT).

Fuck the Canadian news media for hyping up this nothing burger. All of them deserved to have their offices egged

  20. Ask_DontTell on

i know a lot of people in AB think this is negotiating ploy with Ottawa but i really feel like there’s a different mood in Canada right now. we were a much nicer and gentler country in a more orderly world then. now the country is feeling threatened and i think there’s a real risk everything backfires on AB and Canada, especially w Trump salivating over our resources and plotting to take us.

  21. Unfair-Cabinet-9011 on

So that isn’t how it should or would work. All or nothing. You don’t get to demand independence and keep all of the perks of being Canadian.

    ETA same goes for Quebec.

  22. David_Summerset on

All a referendum will do is allow the Americans a chance to interfere in the stability of Confederation.

That’s the real threat, once the CIA starts doing their thing.

Not that they have the best track record

  23. So 30% have been influenced by foreign actors and agents with a core agenda of dividing Canada. This is a threat that needs to be ended and exposed.
