It’s important we don’t capitulate on this. Trump doesn’t let a threat go once he sees it’s working. Where a normal world leader might invoke something like this to open negotiation on a lasting compromise, Trump has demonstrated again and again that he doesn’t work that way.

If we look frightened and cancel the deal with China, it won’t be the end of it. Next it’ll be cutting off more trade with China or 100% tariffs, then exclusive no-bid access to Canadian minerals or 100% tariffs, then finally, annexation or 100% tariffs.

Normal governments know that when they act like that, they create an incentive structure that makes it impossible to engage in negotiations in the long term. But Trump has spent a lifetime taking advantage of the expectation that he’ll behave that way, using people until he finally discards them, unrewarded. We have to be savvier, realize who we’re dealing with, and understand that the current world order doesn’t reward capitulation to threats from America. It only emboldens them.
