My masters thesis around a decade ago was on the cybersecurity of industrial control and SCADA systems.
The deployment of Stuxnet proved that offensive cyberwarfare campaigns could have real-world impact on critical national infrastructure, but it also highlighted how insecure the systems controlling said assets generally were. Security was an afterthought in most of them.
