That’s actually a good thing. Just like Trump help us get Carney elected, now he is insuring that Alberta’s referendum will lead to a big „Hell no“.

Thanks Trump for reviving the Canadian Pride like no one ever before.

    All united agains him.

The reality is that the numbers don’t support this in Alberta (~20%). Like, at all.

Best play here is let Smith et al. play their game for a bit while Minnesota shows us how that would look.

This is how it starts, it’s the Russian playbook for destabilizing a country by amplifying domestic issues. Unfortunately social media has given them a tool so powerful it doesn’t take nearly as long to create these effects.

We have had it so good for so long people take this easy life for granted when compared to our parents/grandparents generation. Creates this wild feeling of being owed something and a me first attitude that drives an irreparable wedge between neighbours and society at large. It’s times like these we ought to be working together to solve issues and present a united front against those who seek to burn everything down to make themselves feel better.

„Danielle Smith, the province’s conservative premier and a former radio host, authorized the petition by changing the rules without first verifying the constitutionality of the question. She maintains close ties with the Trumpist sphere, refusing to openly criticize the US president, unlike other elected officials in her country.“

  5. I know a lot of people don’t think this is going to go anywhere but I feel like it can really pick up traction under an intense media campaign leading up to a referendum. Even if the vote is close and choosing to remain I think the US will use it as a pretext to „support“ Alberta against its oppressor Canada.

Like it or not but a lot of Albertans feel they have got the shitty end of the stick from the feds over the last decade. Before anyone brings up the feds buying TMX, think about the events that lead up to the company abandoning the project in the first place.

  6. the US – despite our historic relationship with them. Is a rogue police on the brink of collapse.

I sure hope our government is prepared to shut the border down at a moments notice, suspend all intelligence, military co-operation, airspace.

I would however like to see the ability for American refugees who are sponsored by Canadian citizens to be allowed to resettle here.

The way the federal government can fight back in Canada’s interest? Immediately ban American social media platforms from operating in Canada, at minimum, Meta products and X.

ETA Tiktok too, to protect the brain capacity of our youth.

  8. You mean USA is interfering with Alberta with misinformation to destabilize Canada.

Because that is what is happening, I have seen it first hand.

The Republicans know to win over Conservatives is to lie to their faces.

Some will support it but it will not except 15% of the population.

These people be punished and so do the Conservatives who are working with the Republicans on this.

Make sure its pen, paper, and ink for that referendum.

Don’t need american voting machines anywhere near our democracy.

Alberta media and politicians are completely owned by US oil interests from retained revenues. They gave them away under Lougheed and Klein. Otherwise, they might have a sustainable plan to migrate from last century’s oil dependency that sends all financial rewards to Texas.

Good luck joining the US from their landlocked position when all the disenfranchised southerners show up looking for work. Alberta is xenophobic now. Consider that hot mess.

We have to tighten the loose ends in Alberta. This could be a strategy of our friends in the south to break Canada from within. It’s a time to band together, rather than raise separatist threats.

Stuff like this makes me think that China was very smart to create their “great firewall”.

With the amount of influence that algorithms have and the ease of reaching millions of people across all age groups, there’s infinite potential for hostile parties to sew discontent and push their agendas while masquerading as Canadians.

Who knows how many of the people you see arguing, lamenting, and sharing their opinions on Canada are American, Chinese, Russian, Indian, Israeli, etc, trying to weaken Canada.

My apologies for my fellow Albertans, I only moved here for the cheap housing and the province being English unlike my home province of Quebec.

Feels like a different world sometimes.

  14. I used to think the Chinese fire wall or indias blocking of various social media platforms was to far And authoritarian.

I now see the error of my ways. We need to ban American news and social media. Canada and the EU need to form our own protected online bloc. There are bad actors out there actively attempting to cause division. As seen by so many examples both from American and Russian and whoever else.

For our democracies sake we have to do it. It’s not about freedom of speech it’s about protecting our liberty and way of life.
