That wouldn’t be a decision Quebec/the PQ would get to make, so he is outright lying here. Canada would be the ones who get to decide if post separation Quebecers can retain their Canadian passports, and I for one would heavily favor not just cancelling their passports, but applying tariffs and entry visas making it difficult and expensive for them to travel back and forth.

Carney and the federal government should forcefully denounce the legitimacy of this and humiliate Plamondon. The PQ are just getting nervous that the LPQ and CAQ are both getting new leaders which risks shaking up the narrative of an automatic/inevitable PQ victory.

Alberta and Quebec do realize that you don’t get to separate from a country, and maintain all the benefits of said country…right? You take the good, you take the bad, and then you’ll find…you finally have…the fallout from separation.

Like hell they will.  No society is going to tolerate 20% of their citizenry being foreign citizens of convenience, nevermind citizens of convenience who just elected to cut ties with Canada.

If the law needs to be changed, it’ll be changed.  If the constitution needs to be changed, it’ll be changed.  But one way or another they *will* have to choose between being Canadian and being Quebecois

  4. I also assume he says they can continue using the Canadian dollar, collect OAS, EI, and transfer payments from Ottawa?

    Edit: removed CPP from list

  5. I doubt Canada will reciprocate. Most likely we will offer some form of common travel area agreement like NZ and AU have, or UK and Ireland. But likely Quebecois would have their Canadian citizenship rescinded as a condition of the separation.

  6. As an Acadian living in Quebec…. I’ll get up and leave montreal. I’m Canadian, no matter what fever dream PsPsppPppsS says. Piece of shit.

This reminds me of the promises made to the British public before Brexit.

Then…when the plug was pulled they realized they no longer had the privilege of just working, studying and traveling without bureaucracy and approvals. They lost access to convenient markets and they have to negotiate everything and handle everything on their own without the leverage of the entire EU behind them.

In the balance, they’re still arguing about whether or not Brexit hurt them. And in my view, if you have to argue the matter, then it’s likely not the resounding success it was meant to be. You either know you’re doing great or you are not. But I digress….

Quebec and Alberta have both benefited greatly from being part of Canada whether they want to admit or not. They are important parts of our confederation and I don’t want to see them go. But IF that happened, they don’t just get to leave while retaining passports and pensions and free access to shipping lanes and money for infrastructure.

Of course, they’ll make excellent keepsakes, like my collection of French francs. None of us will be using them as actual documents anymore however, since the country will cease to exist.

  9. Maybe America can give them passports as a replacement? I for one know for a fact that Quebecers would be ecstatic in that scenario.

Not their decision to make. No passports, no currency, no foreign trade deals, no foreign consulates, no military and Canada keeps all crown and indigenous land. That’s what a province that separates gets. They always sound like bratty teenagers that demand independence but still want to borrow the car on Saturday night.

If you believe Quebec would be better separate, why would you want dual citizenship with Canada? Because traveling on a Canadian passport opens doors for you? Because you might want to take advantage of your Charter rights to freely travel or move throughout the country?

    Canadians are so dramatic.

First of all, we ain’t there yet.

The PQ has a high probability of being elected, but sovereignty itself still sits at 35% popularity.

Before there’s a referendum, even a winning referendum, there’s time.

On the very hypothetical scenario where Quebec would win its independence, why yes, of course, citizens could keep their passports.

The Canadian government changes its rules on citizenship last fall. To make it easier for foreign born citizens to keep their citizenship. You don’t even have to live in Canada anymore to be a Canadian citizenship. That’s the rule to House of Commons and the Senate ratified. Once you gain Canadian citizenship by living in the country for 3 years, paying taxes here for 3 years and passing a simple citizenship test, all of your descendants until the end of the world as we know it will gain Canadian citizenship, or inherit the citizenship of its successor state(s).

That’s what Canadians wanted. If I am a somewhat wealthy individual from Lebanon, I could come here with my family, work hard for 3 years setting up a business, eventually get a citizenship for everyone after 3 this time, and whenever Israel wants to annex my country, my great grand children will be rescued by the Canadian Armed Forces.

That’s the reality of it, that’s what we wanted as Canadians, and no one seemed bothered by this. That’s what defines us as Canadians.

So, yeah, if Quebec gets independent, individuals will eventually get a choice: keep their Canadian passport, adopt a Quebec passport only, keep both.

And unless the Parliament of Canada changes the rules for everyone in the world, there’s not a damn thing it can do about Quebec, or Alberta, or whatever breakout province appears in the next 100 years. The Charter of Rights and Liberties so dear to Canadians, where our Supreme Court Judges have taken a very lax interpretation will prevent any changes to that.

And there have been precedents in Canada, and elsewhere in the Commonwealth, where citizens of ill repute could not be stripped of the nationality. So, for a simple citizen who now finds himself living in a former territory of Canada? It’d be treated exactly the same as a British citizen who found himself living in a breakaway territory from Britain. They weren’t forced to abandon their British citizenship against their will, it just came naturally.

Barely no Canadian have dual British-Canadian citizenship now.

Really a non issue designed to generate outrage.

What are the Quebecois going to do for currency? Are they going for the poutine peso?! The tabarnak Token? The Referendollar (never quite worth a full dollar)? The Bilingual Loonie (only half accepted everywhere)

    > An independent Quebec would allow its citizens to keep both a Canadian and Quebec passport, Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said

Allowed to keep the passport and can keep the passport is very different.

Canada allows citizens to keep citizenship even if they have citizenship in another country. It’s called dual citizenship. He is saying the same thing. Québec would allow dual citizenship.

He is not saying Quebecers get to keep their Canadian passports. That’s up to Canada.

Why did the Gazette change „allowed“ to „can“? Because it’s again just typical rage bait from The Gazette. You all fall for it every time so clearly it works.

  15. spinosaurs70 on

The liberals should openly say no, this ain’t happening.

You don’t get the benefits of Canada without staying in Canada and Quebecers will have to apply to keep there candain citzneship if they stay in the province.

  16. This reminds me of what the PQ was saying around the time of a recent election. Specifically that Quebec could continue to use Canadian currency if they separate. Lol. They will lie to get their desired result, but what they get as the outcome of a real negotiation with the federal government is what they get, and there’s no guarantees of anything.

  17. Canada currently allows dual citizenship. You don’t lose citizenship if you gain another. As the law stands currently if Quebec separates all the new Quebec citizens would keep Canadian citizenship along with their passports and gain a new Quebec citizenship. This is governed by the citizenship act which would need to be amended or repealed and replaced to make what the PQ is saying a lie.
