Fuck, it’s 2026…
Knew this would be Berlin… lol
Germany feels very nostalgic in many ways
That depends.. If the oven is in good shape and has good air circulation then there is zero risk for your health. If the chimney is not working properly, you might actually kill yourself. But that would pretty much makes you a contender for the Darwin award.
Get yourself a FFP2 mask and see it changing the colour over time…
Get a luftreiniger and a atemschutzmaske. Also, keep windows closed during opening of furnace, open them afterwards, so the wind don’t blow up the dust
Also, if your Hoover is suited for sucking in this fine type of dust, use it, otherwise try to find one to clean the oven every couple of refillings
Depends, if the oven and chimney work as intended, no worries.
But additionally to the smoke detector, please get a carbon monoxide detector!
My mom’s often commenting that she had many lung diseases growing up in eastern Germany. Croup, bronchitis all the time. That stopped when the wall fell and people stopped using coal stoves. Now people are getting their cozy wood burning stoves and the airs starting to stink again.
nostalgisch
I’d wear a dust mask when emptying the ovens, and invest in a domestic air purifier. And probably a carbon monoxide detector too.
I still have a furnace, but since I got a heat pump, it hasn’t been running. I wouldn’t have thought that there are still apartments for rent that don’t have a heating system.
Get an air purifier with HEPA and carbon filters.
I recommend some product from the philips 4000series.
Double the air volume of your apartment to evaluate the filter performance needed.
How is this Legal? Coal heating is outlawed in most countries
Do you live in a crematorium?
And then some has the audacity to criticise countries in asia
what the fuck
How is this legally allowed 💀
Only in Germany are people so concerned about their health, but smoke like chimneys all the time.
(Not necessarily directed at OP; i just needed to vent. Forgive me for hijacking the topic 😅🤣)
Where I live (Magdeburg) I cannot leave my house without catching secondhand smoke everywhere I go. At the bus/s-bahn stop there’s always at least one person smoking. There’s 2 cigarette vending machines on my (very short) street.
One of my houses growing up (UK) had a stove we lit with coal. I don’t remember it being so bad, but then, I was a child and didn’t shovel the soot away
