This took me a while to figure out. I think it’s trying to show for each sport which countries in the British Isles has a team at International level. It’s not easy information to present on a map. It’s also misleading. For example in Rugby Union Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales have Teams. They also compete s the British Lions.
Even more complicated since some of the sports are individual.
I never knew the Irish rugby team was united Ireland. Thats pretty cool. You’d think a bigger deal would be made about it. Or maybe it has been and I didn’t notice.
Isle of Mann compete separately in the Commonwealth Games.
It depends if Andy Murray is winning or losing on whether Scottish Tennis players are British or not.
I think Olympics should be 50/50 in NI. Many athletes from NI represent Ireland, including 2 gold medalists in Paris, as well as Rory Mcilroy. It depends on the sport.
Wouldn’t Northern Ireland be both red and green for the Olympics? I have read numerous sources saying there is an agreement with the Olympic bodies of both nations allowing them to exercise either British or Irish citizenship.
Edit: Found this MapPorn post from 8 years ago that has a more accurate Olympic map: https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/s/opzR96MkEI
Actually in the Olympics, the athletes from North Ireland can choose wether they want to represent UK or Ireland
What is that spot in Northern Ireland? a Lake?
I could’ve sworn it was Great Britain for the Olympics, did they change it fairly recently?
Ireland looks like a koala wearing a hockey mask
They actually sink Wales every cricket match
Isles not iles.
What do the colors stand for?
Something to note with the Olympics – those that are from Northern Ireland, but play in sports that have a whole of the isle of Ireland national team (e.g. rugby 7’s or hockey) can choose to declare for the UK or Ireland.
So when it comes to sports, the koala shaped island only wears a hat sometimes.
I think its about time wales had its own national cricket team to be honest
Not sure if this needs to be said anymore, but g’way ta fuck with the British Isles nonsense.
