Of course, Trump’s government is doing basically everything to cause that distrust, from provocative words to the implementation of tariffs to threats, even.

At least many leaders of European countries have finally realised that it’s time to start doing things to build a common defensive system.

Unfortunately, in a few European countries there are fifth columns that bring up those anti-EU and pro-Trump plans, and they are the real danger.

How exceptionally stupid would you need to be to say „Well, that’s over, trust restored.“??

  3. CaptchaSolvingRobot on

The trust is broken. The US gave credible threats to invade and blackmail allies.

  4. Lingers… more like currently, it’s being baked into the institutions, hearts, and minds.

Trump stepped back, and so did the EU. But with very different conclusions. The EU right now is acting as if Trump repeats all of it next Wednesday and preparing for another round.

Ever since 2016 I have trusted the entire country as far as I could throw an average weight American. That is to say: I can’t even lift it.

Everything that happens since has validated that. The only thing that states can do to earn my trust is cecede from Trump’s kingdom.

  6. >But Europe’s Distrust of America Lingers.

As if it was something to feel sorrow about… I’d dare say Europe’s distrust of America should (maybe even must) persist!

Yes, it is sad to distrust each other. But for our own sake, a social group such as the USA that appears so unstable and prone to abuse of others SHALL be distrusted. It may be sad, but it is most importantly sane.

I’ve turned down two trips at work to America… expenses paid etc… I won’t go. I can’t see me ever going.

Canadian here. Pretty much everyone with two brain cells up here trust gas station sushi more than that orange mf. Everyone I know will not step foot on American soil and we are boycotting the US hard. I dont see this stopping either.

I also recently saw an article that some hotels in Las Vegas is accepting Canadian dollars at par to attract more Canadians because we’ve pretty much abandoned the US as a travel destination lol. You couldn’t pay me to visit any state in that shit hole fascist country.

Lingers? It should be the fundament and core of our policy towards USA.

The board of peace is a pay to play system designed to undermine the international rule of Law. Europe must move decisively against this new paradigm and nip it in the bud or it may lead to WWIII.

Republicans have announced their intentions, and Republicans play the long game.

The west stepped back from the brink?? Excuse me. No one of any consequence will trust America in the same way, period

  13. steveosaurus on

as an american, i don’t trust us, you should certainly not – though i hope we can change that some day ❤️

  14. RedLemonSlice on

Lingers? Oh yeah, the same way the stench of a week-old rotting fish in the summer heat just… „lingers“.

  15. Sure, stepped back from the brink again. Don’t worry there’s always tonight, tomorrow, and the day after for Trump to do something insane again.

  16. Distrust lingers? It’s the only way for the next generation or two. It’s completely split, a fracture like mr Carney said.

The US sees us as adversaries.

  17. Who wouldn’t be wary of the bumbling buffoon? Way before the Greenland bullshit. Way before the Renee N Good incident follwed by his hideous lies. Way before Venezuela. Way before defending double strikes on incapacitated boats.

Fk me, I can’t list everything… how about since he said about injecting detergent to fight off covid? Or maybe blubbering nonsense like covfefe?

In any case, leaders should’ve been wary of him a decade ago.

  18. I think we should learn from this incident and make sure we can be independent from the US if need be. Just like there is a need for a European defence based on a European defence industry there may be other dependencies that could be used as leverage against us. We are behind in AI for example. At the moment this is irrelevant but in a few years I think this could be a major problem for us. It seems probable that the economy will go through a transformation soon and if the US is selling us the fuel for that transformation the leverage that they will have over us might very well be used to blackmail us into giving concessions.

  19. What began as a U.S. attempt at blackmail has evolved into an escalatory spiral of pressure and counter-pressure. As every major party adopts retaliation measures that are unacceptable to the opposition, Trump has inadvertently demonstrated just how vulnerable the U.S. system is to these very tactics. The attempt to force dominance has ultimately backfired.

Europe needs to run away from US as soon as possible. The Republican Party has gone almost full schmatzi!

  21. KomputeKluster on

Brink. What a stupid article. We must all think bigger, without the US. This means trade with ourselves, Canada, South America, and selectively China.

  22. Adorable-Database187 on

The word lingers is doing the heavy lifting.

The thing is, trumps foreign policy isnt even a 180 from previous ones, except trump just had to dial the corruption, greed and hubris up to 11.

Its impressive really, 80 years of trust flushed down the shitter in a single year.

  23. Wonderful-Variation on

America needs to be viewed as a chimp with a machine gun. We’ve proven ourselves to be extremely unstable, untrustworthy, and unable to remove an obviously deranged person from power in a timely manner.

  24. You can no longer trust America whilst trump is still in the Whitehouse. To do the right thing trump has got too many loyal parasites in the republican party.thst will back him no matter how dangerous trump becomes. Because that don’t want to lose theirs jobs. Because trump demands total obedience and loyalty.

  25. This is a weird decade. This is the biggest political shift of a major country since at least 1989, when the Iron Curtain fell and the mighty Soviet Union began to fall apart. Really interesting to witness it all, although also very concerning at the same time. I think the ship has sailed in regards to preserving the alliance as it was before 2025, even if the US Democrats gain power again in 2028.

It’s going to take another Obama 2 terms to semi-repair this… if it’s at all possible.
