Because its her best chance of getting back on the cabinet.
Starmer never liked her and blamed her for losing the Hartlepool by-election, hence demoting her and attempting to fire her as deputy party leader.
Its a win win for Ange if the rumor is true that Starmer will block him standing she gets points for being supportive and might be able to gather support for a tilt at the leadership herself (doubt she will but its worth a punt for her).
If Andy does get the greenlight and wins the by-election then she is in a good position to return to cabinet in a more senior role. Its all upsides for Ange in supporting Andy whether he decides to stand we will see soon enough.
Yeah he should, people should have the chance to vote for a leftist.
If he fails he fails, but gatekeeping him out robs only the electorate their say
Changing leader now for no real reason would be incredibly dumb. Doubt very much that Burnham will be up for this, no matter how much the media want it to happen.
Can you imagine Andy Burnham being allowed to stand and then the Green party candidate takes the seat?
So is there any other reason for Starmer to block this other than feeling his leadership position threatened?
This will be a disaster for all involved.
Scenario 1: Burnham loses the by-election and gets humiliated and his position as MOGM is forever weakened.
Scenario 2: Burnham wins the by-election, challenges Starmer for the leadership and loses. He’s gotta remain as a backbench MP when he could’ve stayed as MOGM.
Scenario 3: Burnham wins the by-election, challenges Starmer for the leadership and wins. Resulting in an even more fractured party limping along to the GE.
He should do the right thing and not attempt to get into parliament until at least a couple of years until we’re closer to the 2029 GE. Swapping and changing the leadership and the cabinet this early on would be insane, no matter how bad they currently look.
I like Burnham, but now is not the time for politicking and self interest.
