It’s worth noting that council CEO is not the comparable position to PM. The elected leader of Birmingham City Council – the largest local authority in Europe – is on about £80k, and that’s the comparable position between local and central government
The direct comparison of a council CEO would be to heads of civil service departments. The head of the civil service overall is on about £200k
Birmingham isn’t included in their dataset but £295k is the salary for the current CEO, who is the leader of a troubled organisation with a turnover of about £4.4bn, nearly 10,000 direct employees and lord knows how many via subcontracted/outsourced operations. It’s a big organisation and needs paying well. As a resident of Birmingham, if she can sort out the organisation so it works properly she’ll be worth every penny and then some.
No council CEO is going to be able to go on to a life of after dinner speaking and all the connections you make as PM.
Also just to say that the Taxpayer’s Alliance is a highly biased organisation with an axe to grind againts public spending. Obviously the facts of the matter are right but they are not an organisation to take at face value.
Are council CEOs overpaid? Maybe – but comparing it to the PM salary is a false comparison – and generally compared to the private sector, public sector positions are lower paid, and that’s where your competition is for these roles, and it’s pretty direct competition.
edit for a comparison:
Kier construction – turnover £4.04bn – CEO total pay – £3.75million (https://www.erieri.com/executive/salary/andrew-davies-aggy)
Isn’t this a compelling argument that they are all wildly underpaid?
I mean it’s like if you were the head of a decent sized business employing thousands of people, except instead of selling widgets this is a business that changes the lives of everyone around you every single day.
What’s the phrase? Pay peanuts, get monkeys…
Yeah but the PM and president of the US get a ton of benefits for life as well even after they leave including a pension for life and security.
Plus make a ton of money speaking beyond their salaries or making books which can make tens of millions easily.
So comparing this more to heads of charities it seems reasonable if they do a good job the idea being they could work privately and earn more money otherwise with their skill set.
