  1. Dane here.

There has understandably been a lot of confusion, and also anger in Greenland and Denmark after the news last night. Many are asking „How can Rutte negotiate on behalf of us?“.

    Currently we know the following:

Monday the Greenlandic Minister of Foreign Affairs as well as the Danish Minister of defence met with Rutte in person and had a productive meeting realigning goals and discussion options, they also reiterated the red lines that cannot be crossed including giving up sovereignty.

Since then we have also heard that both the Danish Prime Minister as well as the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Danish Minister of Defence have all been in contact with Rutte several times last night, both before and after Ruttes meeting with Trump. They have also all said to Danish Media that there is no change on the red line regarding giving up sovereignty. Additionally Rutte has said himself that sovereignty was not discussed on the meeting.

We can thus so far only conclude that any agreement probably includes the US still being allowed to put up more bases. Maybe a teeny-tiny mention of potential loss of US bases in Europe and thus loss of ability to project power in Africa and the Middle East if NATO breaks. And then apparently something about minerals and the Golden Dome as mentioned by Trump.

Denmark last year signed a contract with USA (negotiated under Biden, signed under Trump) that cannot be broken for 10 years, allowing extensive access for US military personel at Danish bases in Denmark itself, including that they would be under US jurisdiction etc. kinda like what is known from other countries. It has obviously been undergoing a lot of debate with the recent events, but it is signed and apparently cannot be cancelled now from my understanding (feel free to correct me).

In light of that agreement I think we are going to see the US expand with a couple of Golden Dome-related installations in Greenland under similar rules, which does not give up sovereignty directly, but gives more autonomous control to USA in the area immediately around the bases. Denmark may even pay for some of those installations I guess.

Then there is probably some help with removing obstructions for American mining companies if they run into trouble around regulation regarding the mineral deposits. The extraction rights to the huge REE deposit that everyone is talking about, Kuannersuit/Kvanefjeld, are currently owned my an Australian company with partial Chinese ownership (and they have sued the Greenlandic government over denied permits to mine). I imagine some sort of deal could be set up to compensate them for the gigantic amount of money they spent prospecting and exploring the deposit, on the condition that they abandon the claim. This does not solve the reason their mining permit was denied, Greenlandic legislation must be changed for that, but that can be negotiated further down the line. Right now that would remove perceived Chinese encroachment on Greenland. To my knowledge, all other approaches from the Chinese to build/own infrastructure etc. in Greenland has already been denied by Denmark at the request of USA, and this specific company was not (partially) Chinese owned, when they got the exploration permit.

Finally we will probably see a joint European (EU+European part of NATO) mission in Greenland on a more permanent basis to help alleviate US concerns about territorial defense and protection, without the US having to pay the bill. This is in the common interest of all of NATO and many NATO members have already shown interest in such a project.

Edit: Forgot to mention: Another REE project in Greenland is Tanbreez which is linked to GreenMet, a company with several investors from Trumps inner circle of billionaires. I am not that informed about that project (yet anyway).

Edit 2: Rumours are out that the framework deal includes pockets of Greenland with US bases (including new bases) would be under US sovereignty. Rutte has specifically said there were no discussions of sovereignty, and Danish PM Mette Frederiksen has very clearly denied that such an agreement exists. There has been NO agreement on sovereignty and this is still a red line for both Greenland and Denmark. Similarly there has been rumors of critical minerals discussions, Rutte has Thursday denied to Reuters that critical mineral exploitation was discussed. Considering Trump mentioned minerals after the meeting yesterday, I don’t know where that leaves us… Non-critical minerals? There are a lot of those in Greenland too.

This was just another one of Donald Trump’s little stock market manipulations and distraction from the fact that he raped children.

Absolutely zero concessions should be made or given. It’s time for the rest of the world to absolutely cook the United States. Forget the old ones on Google, I want to see brand new images of Americans using wheelbarrows full of cash to buy a loaf of bread.

Dear Americans! Kick him out of office… no matter how. Or you will end like devasted Germany in 1945. Nazis will never win.. your country will be destroyed for decades. Believe us Europeans… we had this shit already.

  4. Maybe Rutte said „we’ll look into mineral rights“ which is Trump speak for announcements with no substance and no intention to do anything about.

  5. So much noise to apparently get what he already has… Narcissistic, greedy and stupid are awful combinations.

  6. Three weeks ago Trump is posting about “Complete and Total Control” and saying anything less than full ownership is “unacceptable.” He’s ordering JSOC to draw up invasion plans. He’s saying he doesn’t need international law. At one point he literally said he needs ownership because it’s “psychologically needed for success” – not even bothering with a strategic justification.

So Denmark says no. Obviously. Frederiksen goes on TV and says a US attack ends NATO and they’ll invoke Article 5. The actual Chief of the Danish Army flies to Greenland and tells reporters he’s ready to defend the island. France sends alpine infantry, Germany sends recon teams, eight NATO countries put troops on the ground within days. The EU freezes the trade deal from last summer and starts preparing the Anti-Coercion Instrument.

Trump goes to Davos, announces he won’t use force anymore, meets with Rutte, comes out claiming he got a “framework” and a “concept of a deal.”

So what’s actually in this framework? Frederiksen already said Denmark can’t negotiate sovereignty. Greenlandic politicians said sovereignty over even small areas is off the table. Rutte confirmed mineral rights weren’t part of the discussion. NATO’s spokesperson said Rutte “did not propose any compromise to sovereignty.” What’s left is basically Arctic security cooperation they could’ve gotten by asking nicely instead of threatening to invade.

He demanded total ownership. He got a vague commitment to keep talking about Arctic security. Denmark said they’re open to Golden Dome cooperation as long as it respects their territorial integrity, which they were already open to, because that’s just how NATO works.

And look at the timing. Markets tanked on the escalation. Only 8% of Americans supported an invasion. Even Mike Johnson called it “completely inappropriate.” Trump showed up at Davos, ruled out force, met with Rutte for a bit, and suddenly he’s posting about his incredible framework deal. The guy blinked because the politics were a disaster at home and abroad, then slapped “art of the deal” branding on a complete retreat.

In his message to Norway’s PM he actually wrote that he no longer feels an “obligation to think purely of Peace” because he didn’t get the 2025 Nobel. That’s the explanation for threatening to invade a NATO ally. A tantrum about an award.

Denmark’s official threat assessment now lists the US alongside Russia and China. European allies just ran a live exercise in treating American pressure as a military threat. And Trump walked away with a promise of more meetings, pretending he won.

North Korea all over again. Fire and fury, photo op, nothing. Except this time allies genuinely prepared to fight him, and that perception doesn’t reset because he declared victory on Truth Social.

  7. Shouldn’t even be a negotiation over this.

The negotiation should be slipping Trump a folded piece of paper that’s a printed out picture of him flipping the finger to that auto worker.

  8. Translation: Trump got nothing except an explanation of what he already had, but in crayon.

  9. Trump went to far due to his dementia and painted himself into a corner. Rutte gave him an off ramp by discussing what may be able to get done and Trump heard he can get it done. He really isn’t any further ahead than he was before Davos but his base will think he made a deal. How long before he realizes he doesn’t really have anything and it will still all be owned by Greenland?
