  1. French farmers are the main reason this is being blocked.

French farmers are screwing up Europe.

^ All you need to know.

I have to agree with Merz (sadly).

If 20 years of negotiation won’t make a deal with Europe, no partner will trust our deals again.

    1. There’s no reason a judicial overview should take two years to complete.

    2. There’s no reason the deal shouldn’t be implemented in the meantime while waiting on the result of the review.

The deal can be in force while the judicial assessment is ongoing, I don’t see a problem with that. This is the pragmatic approach we need. It would be a fatal signal if Mercosur pulls out because there is another delay.

  5. We might loose 10000-20000 agricultural jobs over 10 years, but we stand to gain 10 times more in Industrial jobs that don’t need to be subsidized AND price fixed to stay profitable, while I pay double the price for groceries…

Edit: to clarify, I don’t think we should remove all subsidies and make farming here infeasible, we need a good mix of both industry and agriculture inside the EU, but the upsides of this deal seem enormous.

I agree this is getting ridiculous, deal that takes decades to negotiate, and the getting sabotaged by foreign interests when it’s at the finish line?

No partner will ever take us seriously if we don’t push this deal through, only US gains from this deal being sabotaged because it keeps the EU mainly dependent on US trade, which makes us easier to push around.

copying US and abolishing the balance of power between branches, great idea.

  8. European decisions are constantly thwarted by the self-interest of each country… which diminishes the union’s power. Yet, this is the foundation of teamwork, and when our leaders disagree, they demonstrate that the union is not a strength, even though these states were formed through a multitude of unions between different regions.

That guy looks like if you asked an AI to make a picture of a German middle aged man.

  10. MERCOSUR wont wait 2 years, we will make business with nations in the Global south. The lost pf this Deal will be pretty bad to EU.

Its ridiculous, we need it whether we like it or not, its needs to happen.

That’s the problem with the E.U…. everybody has to agree. Takes forever.

I wish we would stop caring about all the idiotic farmers throwing tantrums over any deal they don’t agree with. They would protest against anything that doesn’t include them having an exlusive eu wide monopoly. Fuck them. It’s called globalization, if you can’t compete with mercosur then maybe go out of business.

As a Norwegian on the fence about the EU – this is one of my biggest qualms about joining: 750 people – some who get voted in for shits and giggles – are trying to agree, and ofc things will take years on what should take months. The EU is inefficient, slow, and up until last week – toothless. The EU showing teeth like it did, is what made me go from «no» to «maybe». If the EU can show it means business, and gets shit done, I might go from «maybe» to a «yes»…
