Since the 9/11 attacks, Denmark has been one of the most pro-American countries in Europe. The Scandinavian nation sent thousands of troops to serve in the global war on terror, and lost more soldiers per capita than any North Atlantic Treaty Organization ally in Afghanistan.
The close relationship was based on a belief that Denmark and the U.S. shared common values, and that following the U.S. into battle, even at a high cost, would pay dividends in the future.
“I am not going to hide the fact that I am very pro-American and very pro-transatlantic,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in 2023. “In my opinion, you should not be able to put a piece of paper between Europe and the U.S.”
Now, Trump’s threats to annex Greenland, which makes up 98% of Danish territory, have shaken Denmark to the core.

I think many Americans missed this. It’s a tiny nation yet they always supported USA even in useless and stupid wars where many Danish soldiers died like Afghanistan. Patrolling the most dangerous areas. Many nations took part, but not with this great eagerness. You can control the peaceful areas without battles. That’s not the same.
Denmark has always had a perfect relationship to USA diplomatically and even allowed CIA and US army to freely use the airspace for anything they want. US is free to deploy as many troops and bases on Greenland. During the Cold War they did just this and then polluted the area and left. Now refusing to pay for the cleanup which Greenland clearly would never be able to afford. Instead of asking USA again Denmark is paying for all of it. 50 US military installations. US wants more bases? Just move back into the buildings they already used as military bases. This shows exactly how welcome they have always been yet now claim it’s not the case?
If US thinks they don’t need Denmark anymore this will save Denmark money. They buy much of their military equipment from USA and are expanding the spending right now. Denmark could buy from France instead. Even if US does annex Greenland it’s just not worth it. Greenland is a giant net loss economically no matter what. And now they also want to take over the cleanup Greenlanders demand? And instead of relying on Danish military for free they will patrol it all themselves? What about the next useless war? How many more Americans will die when Denmark doesn’t take part? I saw the news segments on Fox News mocking Denmark claiming Trump was correct. This sort of stuff is never forgotten.

What is really frightening is such supposedly reasonable people such as Mike Pence or David Patreaus have outright said Greenland being taken is a good goal. They only diasgree with force being used. The US Establishment truly think nothing of just taking it. You can see the manfacturing of consent in real time as they spin up stories about historic mistreatment of the locals. How the CIA were found contacting dissidents in the country.
You cannot conduct yourself in such a way and expect no blowback as Mark Carney alluded to in his speech. The USA now has to be hedged against in the same way you hedge against Russia or China.
