I’m curious how close to competitive the proposed 3rd district is. It contains some very Republican territory in Cecil and Carroll Counties, the more Republican parts of Harford County, and the less Democratic parts of Howard County. The parts of Baltimore County and City it relies on to lean Democratic are relatively small. It’s probably a secure hold for Democrats this year given midterm habits, but it could be vulnerable in a less Democratic-leaning year.

Our current governmental system is broken and unfixable. Both sides gerrymandering and disenfranchising voters. Rigging the system to keep themselves in power. Rules that don’t really allow for any other party to come forward and be heard nationally. People get elected and spend time undoing what the last leader did. Members of congress only doing what is in their best interest, not the people they represent. The whole thing has fallen apart.

The US is and has been gerrymandering our democracy into the ground. what has really shocked me is now you have voters cheering for it. When Texas did something clearly against the spirit of democracy, California announced its intention to do the same and Reddit nearly broke it arm patting it on the back.

I guess voters don’t realizes that solidly red and blue voting boundaries generally produce the worst and frequently most corrupt politicians because there is no meaningful competition and they cater to the extreme.

Sad to see this in yet another state.

  4. If the US ever gets out of the MAGA insanity, there will be a need to just stop the gerrymandering on both sides. This will require a major reform of the way democracy works in the US. And democracy starts with a fair and nonpartisan mechanism for defining ridings.

Many counties have established an independent board for doing just that in a nonpartisan, general way. People are not always happy with the outcome, but it prevents most of the partisan abuse we’ve seen in the US.

When redistricting becomes a political weapon, whatever the reason and motivations (good or evil), you know the foundations of democracy are in trouble.

If the left didn’t have double standards they wouldn’t have any at all.

Because this dilutes the concentration of democratic voters in order to make more districts that lean left, will this lead to more centrist, corporate democrats and fewer true progressives and DSA congressmen?

You can always tell a Maryland Gerrymander attempt when they color in the Chesapeake Bay also to make it look less weird haha

Edit: to be clear, not voicing an opinion one way or another here. Just something I’ve noticed about the maps as a lifelong marylander

Republicans got 34% of the house vote in 2024 but only hold 12.5% of the seats. The left’s love of democracy is the fakest thing ever.

  9. I’m generally very opposed to gerrymandering, but since Republicans can’t act like adults and insist on gerrymandering in their favor, it’s great to see that the Democrats are playing dirty in return, as well. You can’t play fair against crooks.
