      Most mainstream media treats this Greenland purchase story as an ego trip or a joke. It is neither.

      Our sale taxes/ income taxes are going to triple because of this. Talk so much about reducing spending. 

      But this also doesn’t make sense if they just want rare earth minerals, Greenland is already a business partner with the United States, we can just buy from Greenland directly. The overhead costs are way lower to buy instead of annexing a country, investing in infrastructure and then mining ourselves. Like other comments said, we already have permission to extract resources from Greenland. Domestic companies wouldn’t want to invest in the infrastructure either, because the externalities are too high and the profits don’t justify it. 

      It will make more sense to invest in India, as they also have significant amounts of reserves but lack the technologies to extract it; the labor costs in India are much lower; and the government doesn’t care about externalities as much as westerners and willing to work with western consumers.

      I have a feeling that Trump knows something he can’t publicly say for national security reasons that make it imperative for the future of the United States to purchase Greenland.

      Like. Seriously. This seems both urgent and important.

      He says as much, but I think there must be an imminent and direct threat this purchase would 100% mitigate.

      E.g. there is a Russian weapon/missile 90% ready to be deployed that cannot be defended against if it comes in via Greenland vector, unless the US builds lines of defence throughout Greenland.

      Why can’t a NATO partner just “let” the US builds lines of defence throughout Greenland? Treaties take years to develop and implement. Sovereignty is complex and will have huge resistance in Denmark. The cleanest way is to purchase the land and just get on with it.

      I honestly feel not buying Greenland would be the biggest real, highest stakes threat to the USA since the Cold War.

      The minerals focus is just an excuse to not cause panic. And a nice secondary benefit that has national security concerns too.
