Merci, Larry.
Every day we are reminded that we live in an era of great power rivalry. That the rules-based order is fading. That the strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must.
This aphorism of Thucydides is presented as inevitable — the natural logic of international relations reasserting itself. And faced with this logic, there is a strong tendency for countries to go along to get along. To accommodate. To avoid trouble. To hope that compliance will buy safety.
It won’t. So, what are our options?
In 1978, the Czech dissident Václav Havel wrote an essay called The Power of the Powerless. In it, he asked a simple question: how did the communist system sustain itself? His answer began with a greengrocer. Every morning, this shopkeeper places a sign in his window: “Workers of the world, unite!” He does not believe it. No one believes it. But he places the sign anyway — to avoid trouble, to signal compliance, to get along. And because every shopkeeper on every street does the same, the system persists.
Not through violence alone, but through the participation of ordinary people in rituals they privately know to be false. Havel called this “living within a lie.” The system’s power comes not from its truth but from everyone’s willingness to perform as if it were true. And its fragility comes from the same source: when even one person stops performing — when the greengrocer removes his sign — the illusion begins to crack.
It is time for companies and countries to take their signs down.
For decades, countries like Canada prospered under what we called the rules-based international order. We joined its institutions, praised its principles, and benefited from its predictability. We could pursue values-based foreign policies under its protection.
We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false. That the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient. That trade rules were enforced asymmetrically. And that international law applied with varying rigour depending on the identity of the accused or the victim.

NYT journalist saying he wrote the speech himself too.
„Carney wrote his own speech, per official. It is unusual for a leader to do so for a major speech, normally they give input & have 1 or more speech-writers do it. Although it’s quite clear this is Carney through and through to anyone who’s been listening to him.“
Carneys speech does not represent reality at all. People like him and all the people giving him a standing ovation are the people who created Donald Trump`s path to power in 2016. They are the reason why a far right party will win in France in 2027, why AfD is currently leading in polls in Germany, why Nigel Farage is likely to be the next PM of Great Britain. The world is becoming more nationalist an protectionist because of people like Carney and a fancy speech in front of elites and billionaires isnt gunna change that especially if the lives of the people he was elected to lead continue to get worse off. I get it the boomers love the nostalgia of Canada being some great middle power but we arent and he is simply appealing to these people with these grand travels before he calls an election to try and win a majority off these vibes even though it would be foolish at this point in my view as domestically things are only getting worse for the average Canadian.
There is a potential aspect of the current Greenland situation, that I randomly noticed.
If you go to Google Trends, select region/country United States, select time period 12 months.
For the Term ‘Greenland’ you can see a moderate spike last spring, then a completely flat line until recently. Then if you select the time period last 30 days, you can see that the recent huge spike started on January 3 or 4.
For the Term ‘51st state’ the spikes started after the 2024 election, with the last major spike around June 1, 2025. Again the recent spikes started on January 3.
There possibly appears to be some correlation specifically with Musk’s personal influence in the White House. On May 30th 2025 he left his position with the administration. That is when the talk of Canada becoming the 51st state died down.
Then on January 4, 2026, he tweeted that he had dinner with Trump the previous day. That is precisely when things with Greenland and Canada started again.
There does not appear to be any visible correlation with the Russian Ukraine propaganda (for example the August Alaska meeting or the intense negotiations in November just before US Thanksgiving).
There also does not appear to be a consistent and sustained correlation to the people who have had constant access to Trump throughout the year (For example Vance (Thiel) or Miller or other US billionaires).
As many people have noted, US military control and mining don’t really make much sense as reasons for these actions. But could they serve as serious and believable excuses to hide other goals?
So what could be another potential reason? Musk is a natural born citizen of Canada!
Controlling Greenland for him could serve two purposes, to isolate Canada geographically and to obfuscate the potential purely personal interest. If he could somehow achieve some type of proclamation that Canada becomes a US state, he could proclaim himself to be a natural born citizen of the US. (Proper legal procedures don’t seem to matter anymore anyway, all you need is some proclamation and a corrupt judiciary)
He came to the US as an immigrant, so he is currently extremely vulnerable to any future administration who could always find some excuse to strip him of US citizenship, deport him and nationalize his companies.
But even more importantly, for someone as ambitious as Musk, the Article 2 of the US constitution specifically requires that only natural born US citizens are eligible for US presidency. In a fog of a huge international crisis or even war, a natural born US president Musk could suddenly become a reality?

It still blows my mind that we managed to get this guy to lead our country, and his leadership was on full display.
What a speech.
I’m not a Liberal supporter in the slightest and have a lot of sharp (albeit fair, I think) criticism of the party but this was an excellent speech and a very articulate assessment of what’s happening and where we need to go.
