  1. Have you taken into consideration costs like shipping, insurance on shipping , registration tax , customs vat + duty?

  2. The yen is super cheap at the moment though so not entirely a fair comparison. It’s actually a smaller difference than I expected.

Comparing a vehicle that literally is built in their own backyard versus one that needs to be imported is completely different…..but yes, new vehicles in Malta are still overpriced.

It’s pretty normal that products are much cheaper where they’re made than in other countries…

  5. As someone who managed to import a second hand UK car to Malta, I can tell you there’s a reason the price is €10k+ higher here than it is there.

Transport from UK to main land (france, netherlands) €1k to €1,5k, import VAT €1,3k, custom clearance €200, CoC certificate €250, export transit doc, petrol costs, ferry costs, multiple manditory inspection costs, etc, €€€

then a big one is registration tax €5,5k, plates, etc, etc.

Takes weeks of planning, calling, and multiple days of driving, multiple visits for different documents and checkups, so if you consider the ‚labor costs‘ for the effort on those, it’d be even worse.

Then I hear people saying how crazy it is that my car costs €11k in UK and people have to pay €24k here.

I don’t even wanna know the headache it gives to import from Japan.

Now check what you’d have to pay for a Maltese grown tomato in Tokyo vs Mosta!

That is the Maltese greed tax, where owners of companies make sure they pay as little as legally possible (sometimes less), then charge you more for the privilege of purchasing from them, whilst crying about how unfair competition from EU is. I try not to buy local anymore.

  8. Heq mela et tinsa is shipping, insurance, port fees, vat, duty, registration u misc fees? Ahna bilfors affarjiet li jigu impurtati ha jkunu jiswew aktar ax kollox jew bil vapur jew ajpruplan jigi. Li kieku naqbel mijak jekk xi haga issir malta u issiba irhas min barra emek nghid andek ragun

While there may be partial explanations (like shipping in this case), it’s laughable how the Maltese jump to the defence of high prices when something like this comes up. The Maltese Ġaħan is the capitalist’s greatest asset.

  10. It’s EU 😂.
    1. All the nonsense extra features like sensors telling you to take coffee… cost money and are generally not implemented in other countries
    2. High fees

In fact if you see cars like BYD Dolphin surf in Asia they start around 10k, less than here after the grant, meaning EV grants are really just rebate of all the fees , taxes and nonsense , not an actual grant

OK, so obviously this is a shit comparison, however, cars are still ridiculously more expensive brand new in Malta than in other EU countries.

I moved to Poland last year and the Yaris still starts from like 5,000 Euros less than in Malta.

„but you can’t compare such a big country to Malta we’re a small population“

I call bullshit on this. When you consider HOW MANY Toyota dealers there are across the country, and divide the population by that many dealerships, you end up with the same Dealer-To-Population ratio. And it’s still cheaper. Because they have competition they need to fight against.

And that is at base price, not including deals dealers will give you because they don’t want to lose your business.

I recently bought a car and we ended up getting over 4,000 Euros worth of extras and services for free.

  12. Wasn’t the MINI One sold in Malta for €15,000 more than the UK, 20 years ago? Adjust that for inflation…
