By Mark Stone, US correspondent
I’m told that Donald Trump conceded to Keir Starmer in their Sunday phone call that he may have been misinformed about the motivation for deploying European troops to Greenland.
The apparent concession by the American president might provide an avenue to de-escalate the tension over Greenland.
Trump’s motivation for threatening tariffs over Greenland was the deployment of a small number of military personnel to Greenland late last week.
He said in his Saturday Truth Social post, announcing the tariff threat, that the troops had been deployed „for reasons unknown“.
His inference was that he was interpreting their presence as a provocation against him. He singled out the countries who had deployed military personnel for the tariff retaliation.
Starmer sought to persuade Trump that the military deployments are about addressing US security concerns, not countering American threats.
On Greenland, de-escalation is the key focus right now. The tone of Starmer’s news conference this morning conveyed this, along with the gravity of the moment.
The key message
Diplomats often talk about ‚off ramps‘ and concerted effort is now being put on finding ways to persuade Trump to remove the tariff threat and return to measured dialogue over how to resolve the Greenland disagreement.
Persuading the US president that the troops are there to address his security concerns is key.
But the more Trump continues to refuse ruling out using the military to take Greenland, the more likely it is that European troops do actually become necessary to defend the Danish territory.
These are truly testing and unprecedented times for the transatlantic alliance.
Don’t be fooled. Being inconsistent and unpredictable is part of his MO. He lies like he breathes.
That explains the ‘pacifying’ press conference I suppose
I mean, yeah, Trump kind of gets to put Europe in a no-win situation. He tells them Greenland is a security risk, so he wants it. They deploy troops there in response so he doesn’t need to take it (or at least defuses the „security“ angle somewhat) and he claims it’s provocation against him?
Until the next Fox News nutjob gets in his head and uk gets 500% tariffs on…oh, erm, shit…
The President of the United States is a psychopathic idiot.
… the hell did he think our one officer was doing there? Lol
The amount of damage this one man and his pack of sycophants are doing to America is off the scale.
It will take decades to repair the damage he’s doing, if it’s even possible.
All of this after only a year in office. I feel bad for typing it, but I keep hoping he will die off before it gets any worse, but I wake up every day and his face is all over the news for something else he’s done, or is threatening to do.
But what bothers me more than all of that, is the fact the American public seem to be burying their heads in the sand over it all.
Whatever happened to the pride Americans were so proud of? It’s like their pride in their country being the „best“ (As nauseating as it was to hear that constantly), has now been twisted into „America first, f*** everyone else, even allies/friends“.
I can only hope this is the bullshit he’s going to use to back out of it and „save face“ but I have learned about hoping too much…
Why do we never learn?
Appeasement doesnt work. It never has and it never will. Bullies need to be met in their own terms otherwise it just goes on and on.
International law only works if it can be enforced. With the US going mental, the laws are currently worthless because Trump doesnt care and cant be made to care.
The sane(r) voices in the US seem to be whispering very quietly. So, the UK and EU need to do what they should have done all along which is tool up, retaliate with tariffs until he learns or gets voted out. Lubing up is no good.
guess it is his way of trying to get out of the escalation, guess suddenly the full EU potential „bazooka“ on top of Canada moving product elsewhere, kinda has him in a „problematic“ situation, and this is his way of „trying“ to weasel his way out of it..
Realised he fucked up. UK helping with damage control.
Genuinely expect him to invade just before the next round of presidential elections so he can cancel them and stay in power.
I hate to say this but this was a well played action by Meloni who offered this off-ramp
What a fucking prat. Am just saying it. We have to tiptoe around this idiot with arguably dementia throwing his toys out of the pram on a weekly basis. Short sharp shock is needed by Europe next time with a calculated dumping of US Treasury Bonds + targeted import tarrifs on luxury US items. Should bring some focus lmao 🤣
„A very weak-minded fellow I am afraid, and, like a feather pillow bears the marks of the last person who sat on him. Douglas Haigh on Lord Derby in 1918.
Starmer again being the grown in the room, good thing we have someone in charge who seeks to cool any tensions down instead of retaliating
And now the walking back begins, what a fucking embarrassment Trump is.
Anyway, Epstein files please.
For christ sake stop playing with this cretin and send the SAS to Washington on holiday for a fortnight. Let them do their thing and make the world a better place.
Starmer had handled US relations really well tbf. Definitely positioning the UK as a world leader a million times better than anyone else in recent memory
I understand this is about de-escalation, but I also think it’s about time we removed every single US military base from British and European soil. Yes, we’re reliant on them for equipment. But we always will be, so long as we refuse to pull the plug and invest in our own capabilities. Enough is enough with this, imperialism should not ever be tolerated, in our enemies or our allies.
Starmer seems, at least, to be able to speak too and somewhat de-escalate Trump.
Good trait to have at the mo.
I presume it was the Russian agent Witkoff or Tulsi Gabbard who „misinformed“ him. Seems to always be those two feeding him lies from Russia
