I don’t see the urgency until the fall at the earliest when we get a Budget confidence vote.

The Conservatives and NDP need time to climb up the polls. Also, Canadians aren’t in the mood for another election right now. Finally, Quebec is going to have a fall election and the federal opposition parties including the Bloc may want to avoid triggering their own election around the same time.

I don’t understand why we’re getting these articles now as if Parliament is on the brink of collapse. This is the strongest minority in history with only one seat away from a majority. If this is a problem, Trudeau must have had a problem his entire 10 years.

An election would require a lot of things to come true:
    – Freeland’s seat flips blue
    – Libs fail to get one (or two) more floor crossers
    – the CPC and BQ decide it’s worth the risk of being blamed for causing an election
    – the NDP and greens both decide to support that

If the NDP are out of their minds enough to choose Avi Lewis as leader, I could see the Liberals calling a snap election just to finish the NDP off for good and get their majority.

  4. I think it’s fair to say that if Carney doesn’t get more floor crossers, an early election seems quite likely. But still, 2026 is not a great year to have an election for the Liberals, given the ascension of the PQ in Quebec. If they waited just a year, it would be such a massive advantage in the province, as an unpopular PSPP would drag down the BQ.

Still, we’ll find out what’s going to happen in the immediate days following Poilievre’s leadership review. He’s guaranteed to win, but if there are potential floor crossers they’re waiting for that to happen.
