A significant portion of the territory controlled by the SDF is predominantly Arab. The only mechanism that could keep Arab tribes together with the Kurdish YPG, the core of the SDF, for a long time was a major threat like ISIS and a monthly salary of $400. It was clear that unity wouldn’t last long with a Sunni government in Damascus. If the government in Damascus uses financial leverage, Arab tribes within the SDF will gradually begin to align themselves with the central government.

The highway marked in blue was the buffer zone that Turkey wanted, but so far there has been no active military movement on the Turkish side. Integration of the SDF into the Syrian central government is possible. It’s likely that a few Kurdish-majority cities will experience unannounced autonomy. Currently, the areas marked in yellow will be predominantly SDF territory.
