Systematic use of assault units as a temporary reserve for “firefighting” on the front line remains one of the key problems in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, negatively affecting the stability of defensive positions.

This was stated by Stanislav Bunatov, known by the callsign “Osmán,” commenting on the organization of combat operations of assault units on Telegram.

“A major problem in the assault forces remains the task of ‘firefighting.’ Assault regiments and battalions are essentially a reserve hub, from which combat companies and battalions are sent under the command of brigades that are faltering under enemy pressure,” he said.

According to Bunatov, instead of systematically employing assault regiments as fully operational combat units, their personnel are scattered among units that have lost control of sections of the front. In his view, this reduces the effectiveness of both the assault units themselves and the overall defense.

He also emphasized that the logic behind transferring trained assault troops under the command of struggling brigades has remained unclear for a long time.

“Why hand over more or less trained soldiers to the commander of ‘X’ brigade, when an assault regiment could fully occupy the problem sector and take the ‘X’ brigade’s personnel under its command — a mystery that no one has been able to solve for at least two years.”

Bunatov also highlighted the difference in combat management approaches between commanders of assault units and certain brigade commanders. According to him, some commanders of assault regiments and battalions have already demonstrated the ability to effectively stabilize the defensive line even under critical conditions.

“There are commanders of assault regiments and battalions who have long proven that they can competently manage combat and hold the defensive line, unlike those brigade commanders who, over a cup of coffee, send attached assault groups to retake positions that have already been lost but weren’t reported,” he said.

Previously, we reported that military ombudsman Olga Reshetylova had stated that she had received multiple complaints from servicemen of the “Skelya” regiment regarding serious violations of their rights, including beatings and psychological pressure from the command.
