European Union lawmakers are poised to block approval of the EU’s trade deal with the US over President Donald Trump’s vow to impose tariffs on countries that supported Greenland in the face of American threats.

Manfred Weber, president of the European People’s Party, the largest political group in the European Parliament, said on Saturday that agreement with the US is no longer possible.

Just do it instead of saying you’re going to. At this point threatening to do something is the same as not doing it.

  3. FollowingHumble8983 on

Yes please. This deal was terrible in the first place. Never give an inch to Trump. Make him lose face on the global stage so his strongman politics just appears weak. If he losses all domestic support this entire nightmare goes away,

  4. HumanSquare9453 on

Good. Way to go Europe!!! Enough pushback, european soveignty need to be enforced

  5. Wait for Trump to throw toys out of pram about how dishonest the EU are, a deal is a deal, bad faith, absolutely disgusting and is an attack on the US, more tarriffs!!!!!!

Basically just another day of Trump confessing his sins through projection onto everyone else but him.

  6. Royal-Hunter3892 on

This was bound to happen what did Trump think would happen?

At First Trump announces reciprocal tarrifs Then as a condition for a new trade deal negotiates billions of investment guarantees from Europe

Then makes the Nato countries increase the defence spending to 5% of GDP for their protection
Then plans to invade territory of a NATO country .

And now threatens to impose tarrifs if they don’t accept their actions in Greenland.
    This is beyond crazy.

  7. Standard-School5236 on

Yeah, don’t trust any deal with Trump. We Chinese learned that lesson in 2018. We negotiated a trade deal, he agreed, went back to the US, and 11 days later just ripped it up. So much for ‘dealmaker.’

  8. Fluid_Mouse524 on

If that deal included chlorine chicken. Then nobody wanted it anyway. Keep your toxic foods.

  9. No-Essay-9008 on

This is actually a legal requirement, not even retaliation. EU is a trading block, and countries cannot face individual tariffs. The trade deal has to be off as the whole block faces the ’new‘ tariff.

  10. f*** it, just cut the US off, do what Canada’s doing, stop entertaining him, stop taking his calls, ignore him and let him deal with the domestic problems he has instead of letting him dictate the conversation internationally.

If this is what it takes to force Trump to let go of this IDIOTIC OBSESSION then so be it, go for it EU

Majority of Americans are sick of this

From 90 deals in 90 days to about one deal with Vietnam, threatening allies, about to destroy NATO and waging war on his own citizens. He is also very close to record low approval level (36%) and might beat his old record (34%)

“The EPP is in favor of the EU-US trade deal, but given Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland, approval is not possible at this stage,” Weber posted on social media. He added that the EU agreement to lower tariffs on “US products must be put on hold.”

The EU-US trade agreement, which European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen struck with Trump last summer, has already been implemented but still needs a nod from parliament. If EPP lawmakers join left-leaning political groups, it’s likely they’ll have enough votes to delay or block approval.

The trade agreement set a 15% US tariff for most EU goods in exchange for a pledge by the EU to eliminate duties on US industrial goods and some agricultural products. Von der Leyen, who oversees trade negotiations for the EU, made the deal in the hopes of avoiding a full-blown trade war with Trump.

A vocal faction of EU lawmakers have long railed against the agreement, arguing it was too lopsided in favor of the US. That anger has deepened as the US expanded a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum to hundreds of additional EU products after the July accord.

I say this as a very tired and embarrassed American, please do this, please do all you can to oppose this insanity any which way you can.

Even ignoring the fact that it’s a poor deal for Europe, if an EU member says no to the US annexing a territory of their nation, and the US is trying to use that as a cause for tariffsto break it, then the trade deal has absolutely no purpose to begin with.

This is clearly an attempt to use economic force to annex a part of a nation that is supposed to be a close ally; any such action needs to be met with equal force and hostility. This is simply unacceptable and not how you treat allies.

Seize Trump’s European assets and let the proceeds go to the Epstein Island victims.

  19. Whats that?

    Actions having consequence?

Yeah, Trump doesnt understand that concept.

    Economic warfare.

Dump a trillion of American T-Bills on the market and ask the Orange Shitstain if he wants more.

  21. copperblood on

    Dear European leaders,

If you want to send a clear message that even Trump and his administration will understand immediately then do this:

Make a very loud public announcement that Europe is going to start dumping US Treasury Securities. The UK for example holds 3/4 of a trillion dollars in US Treasury Securities. If Europe started dumping US Treasury Securities then the US dollar would collapse immediately. And I mean immediately. Sure the US has the strongest military in the world, but what good is your military if you can’t feed them and pay them?

As an American it pains me to say this but the US is done. The world cannot trust the US to lead anymore and it’s time for all this US imperialism bullshit to finally end. Let someone else lead, it’s time. At the end of the day the only ones the US can blame is ourselves.

  22. Trump needs to experience the „FO“ part of FAFO.  The rest of the world has put up with his FA for far too long.

  23. West_to_East on

The EU should push through CETA (provisionally approved) and then immediately engage with Canada to buff it up (modernization in international trade parlance). In particular working on getting more FDI from richer EU states such as France and Germany into Canada so Canada can export what the EU needs; raw materials like rare earths, metals, wood etc. as well as energy and other intermediate goods. Moreover, a CAN-EU military-industrial complex and tech sector should be focused on to cut out the US from some of their most lucrative exports. Make them „home grown“ among real allies.

Maybe it’s time the eu brings up the Epstein files and show him a big finger. He is trying to keep it out of the news so let’s put it into the spotlight again.

  26. Good. There’s no „deal“ if one party can unilaterally blow it up by tweeting from the shitter.

  27. Brave_Nerve_6871 on

To think that Trump could have just coasted on the economic growth and infrastructure investments initiated by Biden. Well, the idiot can’t help himself.

  28. i want eu to put tarrifs on US goods and **services** . So EU is not reliant on US. EU has been all in on US for past decades and now hopefully they wake up and realise US is no one’s friend. and yea the deal Ursula signed to please trump was shit anyway – she basically folded and bent over for DJT.

  29. the EU parliament should pass the „**T**ariff **R**esponse to **U**ncooperative **M**ultinational **P**artner“ act. Set it so that if certain regional partners happen to create retaliatoriy tariffs of a certain value, without even needing to negotiate, an automatic tariff of X + 1% is applied to any country that tries to tariff in response. So america applies 25%, the EU will _by default_ apply 26% straight back.

  30. I_Dont_Rage_Quit on

Just tell him to go fuck himself.

Yes, the usa are a big market, but smaller than India and South America, both of which the EU now have or are completing trade deals with. The usa are replaceable!

No, the usa are no longer attractive markets. Some states are fairly enlightened and adhere to international laws and standards, but overall the union is falling apart and is no longer a reliable trade partner; most of the world is now more reliable / stable and therefore more suited as trade partners. We want stability, not fickleness.

Yes, I did use the plural form for the usa on purpose. The usa are no longer united and should be treated as individual states. The EU should not treat all us states as equal and should instead treat them individually, much like Denmark did when signing the 2025 MOU with California regarding green economy resilience, technology, and innovation (I am Danish and therefore somewhat tainted 😅 (haven’t lived in Denmark for a while though, ask me questions if relevant)).

Those were my two (€) cents.
