Switzerland: Salt awarded for «best fixed-line broadband performance»

Performance tester nPerf has examined Swiss fixed-line providers. Salt offers customers symmetrical fibre.

By Henning Gajek

When it comes to speed and performance tests in fixed-line or mobile networks, most readers think of Ookla (speedtest.net) or perhaps OpenSignal. Alongside these, there is nPerf, which offers a comprehensive test as a smartphone app, with quite realistic test sequences (e.g. accessing popular websites and loading videos at different resolutions).

Swiss fixed networks put to the test

nPerf has now tested Swiss fixed-line providers. The winner, Salt—originally launched in mobile as «Orange Switzerland»—also offers fixed-line services. As Salt proudly reports, it has «remained at the top of the nPerf 2025 ranking in Switzerland with a clear lead». In 2025, Salt customers benefited from the «best overall performance for their fixed-line broadband internet connection». Salt took first place in the nPerf ranking across all fixed-network technologies, as well as in the FTTH (fibre to the home) and Wi-Fi categories.

nPerf’s figures are indeed impressive: in the test, Switzerland’s second major provider, Sunrise, came second, and the long-established market leader Swisscom came third.

Top scores in four disciplines

Salt achieved «top scores» across four key points (KPIs), including download and upload speed as well as latency, and also shared first place for video streaming quality. One reason is likely the «Salt Home» offering, based on symmetrical 10 Gbit/s technology, which delivers dreamlike figures for private customers—and which many other providers (especially in Germany) either do not offer at all or, if they do, is simply unaffordable.

Salt recently expanded its offer with «Salt Home+», which uses the current Wi-Fi 7 technology.

nPerf, an independent international provider of internet performance tests, has published its annual fixed-network barometer for Switzerland.

Salt goes all-in on fibre to the customer

These dreamlike results need explaining: in its marketing, Salt focuses consistently on fibre (FTTH). But fibre is still far from available everywhere in Switzerland, as Salt candidly acknowledges: Salt’s fibre broadband offer is currently available to around 2.9 million households, which corresponds to roughly 60% of all households in Switzerland, with coverage expected to rise to three million households.

(Graphic: Almost unbelievable for German readers: Salt offers 10 Gbit/s symmetrical fibre at German DSL prices.)

Salt wants to offer customers «added value»

To stand out in competition, Salt equipped its customers early on directly with Apple components (e.g. Apple TV). Prices may also make German readers green with envy: Salt’s fixed-line services are available from 39.95 Swiss francs (around 43 euros) in combination with «Salt Home», provided you also have a mobile contract with Salt, which costs extra.

Without mobile, it starts at 49.95 francs (around 53.55 euros). On top of that, 49.95 francs are due for activation of phone/internet and separately for internet TV—so in the worst case a one-off 99.90 francs (107.10 euros) before you can get started.

With the recently introduced Salt Home+ offer, a Wi-Fi 7 router is included and it is combined with attractive premium content from Sky and Canal+.

Max Nunziata, Salt’s CEO, can be proud to offer his customers «the most powerful fixed-line connection at an unrivalled price-to-performance ratio». One can agree with his argument: «Our digital lives increasingly depend on a reliable, high-performance next-generation connection.»

Salt. has the bestest home internet access in Switzerland 😉

  1. I mean obviously the „study“ is questionable if it only tests the three biggest providers.

But what is not questionable is that Salt Home is a product with a pretty good price-performance ratio.

And keep in mind that they have the same offer for the same price since 2018. It was probably what we can call „disruptive“ back then, and it still is good, even after the competition had like 8 years of time to adapt their own offers.

Been with them 6 years on fibre.

Very rarely an issue. In fact I only remember like 3 Sunday evenings in a row years ago where internet was out. Otherwise no issues (apart from them fucking up the move, but they did give me this wireless dongle thing free as compensation so I have internet before they managed to unlock the fibre at the new place).

init7 is the *ONLY* utility bill in my life that I’m happy to pay. Swisscom can go fsck itself.
