I think it goes far beyond being one of the most expensive places to fill up a car. Literary no value for money for anything

  2. We tax road fuel like an amazing luxury instead of vital, the result is that changes in the price of a barrel of crude only make a small difference (yes really!).

This will only get worse as we transition to EVs

    You don’t say!

It’s among the most expensive countries to do _anything_.

Half of all workers pay no income tax. We have to tax some people so how…

It’s a good thing we have an ultra efficient 24/7 public transport system available to all, as otherwise these tax hike would be nothing but punitive

Breaking news. One of the most expensive and highest income countries in the EU has one of the most expensive petrol prices in the EU.

I got around everywhere I needed to in 2025 via Train, Bus, Luas, Ebike & the odd GoCar rental.

Calculated the total cost of tickets, rentals, bike servicing, bike insurance etc.. to be about €490.

If you live in an Urban Area you can save €1000s a year by not owning a car

I imagine you could begin the sentence „Ireland is among the most expensive countries in the EU to …“ and there’s countless numbers of ways to accurately end it.

I used to go to Monaghan not even that many years ago basically every week because the diesel was cheaper than here in Tyrone. Now it’s like 20p more expensive than up here

European Commission figures for January 2026 put Ireland as the fifth highest country for petrol and the third dearest for diesel, but only the 13th and eighth respectively before tax, meaning the gap is largely driven by taxes and levies.

More than 50% or the cost is from taxes (excise duty and several environmental taxes). It’s a joke.

Courtesy of Simon Harris the Minister for Finance with zero academic qualifications in anything not to mind finance.

Can anyone explain to me why we’re so expensive for everything compared to other countries?

Vat on the cost of the fuel + Excise Duty on the cost of the Fuel + Vat on the Excise Duty + Carbon Tax on the cost of the Fuel + VAT on the Carbon Tax + the National Oil Reserve Levy on the cost of the fuel + VAT on the National Oil Reserve Levy = 55% of the most expensive petrol in Europe goes to the government to pay for things like the most expensive bike shed in Europe and the most expensive hospital in the world.

  14. I will say, after living in Poland and Italy for a year, that the prices for fuel in Ireland is not bad considering our minimum wage.

In Poland it’s about €1.5 where the minimum wage is €6-7, the fuel is Italy is about €1.65 although the average wage is much lower

  15. Yes… But there is more than raw numbers. Ok, fuel is expensive, but your salary is ~3000 euro, lets say.

Now imagine that fuel is 10% cheaper, but average salary in that country is 1000 euro, or even less, many ppl make 700 euro PER MONTH on other side of Europe. Now how many times can you fill the same car if you are earning 4x less?

It may be expensive just by math, but its far more affordable based on family income percentage. Same with electricity prices, or even food.

  16. Carbon taxes and government greed. Crucifying ordinary people just trying to survive. It wouldn’t be so bad if there were decent reliable public transport alternatives. Cart before the horse government greed.

Then you have the insurance monopoly racket.
Can’t have a van, can’t have another car without paying a fortune. Absolutely dysfunctional
