  1. Mildly interesting but also misleading because of the disparity of county sizes. If Marion County Indiana was like 60% bigger, still smaller than the smallest california counties, it’d have over a million. And there are plenty of other examples.

  2. It’s crazy that NJ has 9.5 million people crammed into 21 counties with none of those counties cracking a million people. Such a dense yet decentralized state.

  4. Los Angeles County at almost 10 million residents would be the 11th largest state if it were its own. It is crazy how the sub-state entities in different states are thought of and operate so differently. The counties in California have a lot of power, and I think that is a good thing in a state so large.

  5. Not sure what data you are using, but Honolulu County has over 1,000,000 already.

    Maricopa County is huge and has become really crowded over the decades, though nothing like Los Angeles.
