Im not sure taking a chainsaw to USAID was the best approach, but something needed to give. We cannot constantly create dependency cycles where governments learn they can enrich themselves through corruption while the US (and others) pay to do the leg work of taking care of their citizens.

Additionally, the alleged soft power it bought never seemed to actually display itself. Look at a list of countries that received a lot of USAID funding and most of them still by and large either didn’t align with US policy interests or their populace overall held a lot of contempt for the US. The supposed dividends were never there. Turns out paying for South Africa’s antiretrovirals had no impact on their decision to cozy up with the Chinese or Russians, even before trump got into office.
