Trump is going to threat Canada with 100% tariff. „If you don’t comply, we will add 100% tariff on Canadian energy so half of US can go dark.“ That will teach you a lesson.

The biggest winners out of the new US administration was always going to be Russia and China.

A weakening on Russia by the US, and also a potential for China to step up into the gap that the US leaves as it becomes more isolationist and steps back from its partnerships.

Now there is an opportunity for China to step in.

  3. about 250000 cars are imported from asia each year, including about 60% of the kias sold.

  4. This is such a massive L for trump, im not sure what he was expecting but man theres no way that was what he had in mind?

  5. Say what you want about China, but they didn’t threaten to annex Canada to make it their 51st state.

  6. Awkward_War_6068 on

And all of Europe will now follow suit as Trump is now threatning coubtries who support Greenland with tariffs.

Wow, who could have predicted that America First would just end up being America Isolated? Totally unforeseeable/s

  8. Wise_Pr4ctice on

Thank you, Canada (NATO) for making the right decision. Let’s focus on long lasting relationships with China!

I am trying to think of the ideal American President for the CCP and Trump is almost a perfect fit.

This will be good even if you don’t want the Chinese EV. North American car markets are over priced due to limited competition. Let’s say you want to buy Hyundai IONIQ 5, with Chinese EV being in the market, the price of Hyundai will probably be 10% less than they are today.

The U.S. auto industry had this protection for years, and pissed it away. They don’t deserve the market share.

I would like to see the Chinese brands improve to the level of the Japanese in safety, though.

This is something that anyone with any sort of wisdom could have predicted. US lashing out against traditional allies eventually will reward China in the long run.

For the sake of pleasing a wannabe supremacist tyrant still living in the 19th century, the US ceded its soft power advantage. The way Denmark and Canada were treated will never be forgotten, and u can rest assured the motion to decouple away from the US is well underway.

The reduced tariff applies to 49,000 vehicles per year, going up to 70,000 in five years. It’s a meaningful first step, but for now won’t be a meaningful fraction of the ~2 million new cars sold per year in Canada.

  14. If you want you can go look back at all my angry comments since „liberation day“. My call back then was that if people have to choose between a fat fascist in the US and a fat fascist in China they will pivot towards China because at least Xi shuts the fuck up most of the time and is less unstable.

I don’t know how that was so hard to see for the US regime.

  15. I predict a LOT of BYDs being sold in Canada the next few years, and lot fewer GM and Ford.

  16. Possible_Fish_820 on

As a Canadian, this is great. We’ll finally get access to electric cars that people like me could afford.

  17. Wait wait a Chinese ally on our border? Isn’t this what we’re invading Greenland to avoid?

I know trumps gonna threaten us which will push us to do more trade with China. He’s helped China so much it’s crazy, for the slow people the US broke from us not the other way around. He’s handing the world to China on a silver platter all while his base cheers.

  19. subarunoaria on

US made China looks like a good guy, this world is way beyond our comprehension now

  20. Everyone is moving forward. The US is moving backwards. And the stock market is going into outer space. Swell….

  21. Redneckshinobi on

Good! Now in a few years I’ll have an Ev that is cheap and have all the software and hardware at fraction of the cost of a tesla, super stoked.

I love my Ev and it is my dream car, but my next one will for sure be one I’ve got my eye on 2 models I want lol. Hope to keep this Ev forever though and pass the one I have currently down to my kid.

  22. YqlUrbanist on

Is this real life? Will I finally be able to get an EV that doesn’t require remortgaging my house?!

  23. The USA has made clear it doesn’t want free trade. So new deals will not include them. This is the outcome everyone expected. Except perhaps Trump, who has played all his cards and has lost most leverage.

  24. Thank god. Having ridden in BYDs, Li Autos, XPengs, etc, the build quality is noticeably better than Teslas in their comparative price ranges. It’ll be nice to have these cars in Canada

  25. LostInAPortal on

Shouldn’t have followed the US in the first place. That was a stupid move

  26. Imagine hating trans people so much that you voted for this embarrassment. Unreal.

  27. StevynTheHero on

World economy continues without the US.

Trump thought he was the center of the world. He just didn’t know that being the most powerful figure was an honor, but once he besmirched it, he would be forgotten and unmissed.

Just like he will be. Only referenced when describing foolish leaders.

  28. Suds_McGruff on

This is bad news for American auto workers. Too bad so many of them voted for it.

  29. PurpleEsskay on

Good on em. Chinese EVs are damn good cars. I know some don’t like that but it’s the truth.

  30. Euclidisthebomb on

    Dementia Donny for the victory!

What Canada gave for what it got is astonishing to me. Canada agreed to resume EV imports at about the level they were before the tariff tiff and 49k EVs is a very, very small part of the Canadian annual sales market. It will be 1-2 yrs before these cars are even available. But China is lifting its tariffs in March this yr.

And a huge array of other trade and investment oriented agreements.

Canadian auto manufacturers are not at risk from this transaction. Honda and Toyota have very secure places in the Canadian automotive manufacturing, and the sales market and they both are manufacturing hybrids and working into EV in their Canadian plants.

The main player at risk today is Tesla. Their sales have already tanked in Canada and this is quite possibly the final nail in the coffin.

  31. Exactly ,, it was not Canada that caused this war…. Trump “ WE DON“T NEED CANADA „…. so what do they expect of Canada…..??????????

  32. Finally! China has some absolutely amazing tech in little electric cars. I want one so bad. They’re incredibly cheap compared to what we can get here. I can rent a pickup at Home Depot when I need a truck for cheap. The other 99.9% of the time, I want a reliable little commuter for the 500-1,000KM I drive a week.

  33. SinglecoilsFTW on

I want access to Chinese EVs in the US. the BYDs blow most of what we have here out of the water

  34. Altruistic-Medium-23 on

This photo makes it look like Xi has been hit on the head with an ACME anvil and is now seeing stars

  35. cravingnoodles on

The u.s keeps saying that they dont need anything from Canada. Surely this decision wouldnt bother them at all, right?

  36. SpreadEagle48 on

Awesome. I’ve never been much into the electric cars but BYD is doing some pretty amazing stuff, bring em on over.

  37. It’s about bloody time. Canada must forge closer (not necessarily close, but closer) relationships with every country that isn’t threatening its sovereignty, while ignoring the admonitions of the one country that *is*.

  38. Early_Macaroon_2407 on

The first step in decoupling the Ontario auto industry from the US and converting it into an EV-focused industry. And a serious shot across the aAmericans’ bow. I disagree with Carney on, oh, two thirds of things, but I’m glad we at least have a PM with brains and some intestinal fortitude right now.
