    1. >[Home Secretary](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/home-secretary) [Shabana Mahmood](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/shabana-mahmood) has declared she no longer has [confidence](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/confidence) in West Midlands [Police Chief](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/police-chief) Constable Craig Guildford.

      >This decision follows a „damning“ report by chief inspector Sir Andy Cooke into the force’s handling of the ban on Maccabi Tel Aviv fans attending a match against Aston Villa.

      >The report highlighted a „failure of leadership,“ criticising the police for a lack of engagement with the Jewish community and using „confirmation bias“ to justify the ban.

      >Chief Constable Guildford also gave erroneous evidence to MPs, initially denying the use of AI tools, then blaming an „AI hallucination“ for incorrect intelligence, including a reference to a non-existent match.

      >Mr Guildford has since apologised for the error, clarifying that Microsoft Co Pilot, not Google, was the AI tool responsible for the misleading information.

    2. He’s fallen into the PC trap here , it was done for good reason but NOT the reason they made up. It’s like banning children from the Lions enclosure because the children are a danger to the lions, spares the lions blushes and stops him kicking off

    3. Absolutely ridiculous.

He was done for as soon as the Panel had to declare they take funding as part of „Friends of Israel“.

Throwing Britain’s own midlands police chief under the bus – all because he didn’t want this nonesense from a known dangerous „Ultras“ group doing to Birmingham what they did in Amsterdam.

    4. Organic-Feedback1686 on

I find it amusing reading people here and on other subs, who defend his doing by saying „he had a good reason“.

No, he did not. He lied. End of story.

    5. ThamesIronworks_24 on

They are some of the worst ‚fans‘ in the world. Rightly not allowed into the country and should never be allowed in.

    6. RadiantRain3574 on

Well done Labour. I am glad this has been tackled head-on. Hopefully other police forces will feel emboldened to be proactive in policing sensitive communities.

    7. Celtic_Eagle1888 on

Police chief was caught between a rock and a hard place to be fair. Can’t tell the truth about the precious Muslim ‘community’ who’d burn down Birmingham at the mere sight of Israelis.

    8. Deluded_lex on

He lost an employment tribunal worth £820k in 2023 for discriminating against a firearms officer. He’s a bad leader.

    9. I’m genuinely shocked and in a bad way at that at how many people seem to think this is political and that the police chief should be able to get away with using false evidence and lying to Parliament just because of *who* they did it *to*.

That *cannot* be allowed to stand if we want a fair and just society. It’s no surprise the home secretary has no confidence in him. *He lied to the government.* What else has he lied to the government about? What else has he used AI to find „evidence“ of?

    10. and she should now rapidly move to grant her the power to fire him, and then do it.

As well as making it clear anyone related to having made this decision will be fired… remember they lied and covered up that the reason they didn’t want the jewish football club fans to play, was because the locals in Birmingham would commit antisemitic violence against them.

    11. Smashed up places before and after the villa game. Sung horrific chants at both. But it’s Israel, so they’re the victims. Commit a genocide and still somehow pretend Israel is the victim. Clown world.

    12. Vast_Description_201 on

For all those defending him, this is a pattern of behaviour that had him retire from the force, leave the force without a senior officer and then get back into the force at the same position. A practice which he banned his officers from doing.

    13. Illustrated-Society on

I’ll be honest, I’ve never seen such effort from a government to investigate a football teams fans being banned from a game… how bizarre…

    14. MichaelBealesBurner on

When Legia hooligans were banned from Villa park there was no months of inquiry.

    15. Fondant_Decent on

Why did the Dutch say there was no violence/trouble at their local game? That one caught me by surprise

    16. Square-Variation9132 on

The amount of mental gymnastics to defend an established hooligan group

Football hooligan groups have had their movement restricted across Europe for a long long time

    17. Apropos of nothing but I “no longer have confidence in the Prime Minister”
My opinion is as about as valid as the Home Secretary.

    18. Scoobilatchi on

This labour government is an absolute joke. Get rid of this shitshow and let Andy Burnham have a go at PM. Fcuk Reform and the Tories by the way.

    19. I’m in disbelief when I read that they created the report using Microsoft Copilot AI.

    20. I was intending to put a lot in this comment but lets just say this,

The police banned people who were the intended victims and instead decided to beg and plead with the attackers‘ elders to stop the violence and seeing as the police governor knew who the attackers elders were means they knew exactly who was going to be involved and why, and instead of arresting them they allowed them to continue to walk the streets, and were allowed to attend that same match that they intended to cause violence at!

The logical thing to have done was ban all fans from attending the game and have it televised! But in this world we live in, logic does not exist, hell if it was up to me i would permanently ban all football its completely overrated, and let’s face it, well overpaid players for kicking a ball around, fun fact i can guarantee that if players were told they will be playing for minimum wage 90% of the players would quit

    21. Candid-Many-7113 on

How did i know this was about israel with only reading the headline and not having any background?

    22. Euphoric-Badger-873 on

Strange that as you’d be hard put to find anyone who had confidence in the Home bloody Secretary!

    23. Logical-Bed-1897 on

It was on the orders of a certain religious group who lack tolerance for any other religious group, especially jews.

    24. Silver_End_5637 on

Good they banned it of see what happen in there own ground week later game had to be called off because player got hit with something Nar can keep them away form villa park.

    25. Minimum_Possibility6 on

The whole thing is a shit show.

      Was the decision correct. Yes

However the rational was wrong and then lying to parliament. They have to go

However I’ve already heard people from some Jewish synagogue groups on the news peddling that this was an anti semetic group that had been infiltrated by Islamists etc.

In all honesty it’s neither. The ultras have a history of violence. The police chief didn’t want them there, fully understandable. However the way they went about it was wrong but I don’t think it’s at all to do with being an Israeli club

    26. He was right to ban maccabi fans but was an idiot and made up a stupid reason to do so, when the obvious one with tons of evidence was already present

    27. The authorities in Birmingham and the Police did the right thing. Even the Israeli Club agreed. Home Secretary is not thinking this through; all the evidence before and since suggests it was a disaster waiting to be allowed to happen.

    28. Evening-Cold-4547 on

Banning football fans is one of the few things that would give me confidence in a police chief.

    29. sinclairzxx on

Why were the police using Microsoft CoPilot in relation to any policing matter?

      What was entered into CoPilot?

      Where is that data stored?

If it’s been used here, it’s being used everywhere.

This is a much bigger story.

    30. ElectronicPianist547 on

Those fans were hurling racist abuse. Antagonising people, and kids would not have been safe with those fans. The British Goverment is run by Israel. They ‚apparently‘ recognise Palestine, but that is just a smoke screen. Fair play to that Police chief! ##FreePalestine

    31. Big_Distribution_481 on

Mack I caused chaos in Amsterdam and the religious bigotry was on full display by the Israelis. Ban the fucking country from UEFA and Eurovision

    32. Repulsive_Wing_4223 on

Israel controls our politics. We’re living in a post truth era.

    33. 99thLuftballon on

It seems to me like the chief made the right decision to ban foreign football hooligans from a match in an area with known sectarian animosity towards their home country. However, the way he handled the administration and documentation of the decision was highly incompetent.

He does deserve to be in trouble, not for keeping the peace in the face of the threat of violent disorder, but for letting AI write his documentation.
